Sad news for food lovers in Tampa! Cena, the upscale Italian restaurant that’s been a staple in the Channel District for 13 years, has officially closed its doors. The announcement came from partner Ken Stoltenberg, who confirmed to the Tampa Bay Business Journal that the decision also affects their sister restaurant, Bread and Butta Pizza Bar, since both shared the same kitchen.

So, what happened? Stoltenberg mentioned that the past year has been a real struggle for Cena, especially this summer, which he described as “the worst we’ve ever had.” Factors like the overall economy and the fact that Cena is more of a destination restaurant—one that people might treat themselves to—played a significant role.

Another major blow was the recent departure of Chef Michael Buttacavoli, who had become a well-known figure in the Tampa Bay dining scene. His culinary talent and presence will surely be missed. He frequently participated in local charity events, like the Tampa Bay Food Fight, and even had a victory on the Food Network’s “Beat Bobby Flay.”

Opened back in 2013 at 1120 E Kennedy Blvd., Cena quickly won over locals and critics alike. Jon Palmer Claridge from Creative Loafing Tampa Bay once praised it as "the best new restaurant in town." With its intimate atmosphere and a menu that packed a flavorful punch, Cena became a go-to spot for those craving modern Italian fare.

Unfortunately, many of Cena’s customers came from nearby Davis Islands, which recently faced significant storm surge from Hurricane Helene, further impacting their business.

As we bid farewell to Cena, we can only hope that the team behind this beloved restaurant finds new adventures in the culinary world. Thanks for the memories, Cena! You will be missed!
