Local students get park renamed to honor Chitose, Anchorage’s Japanese sister city
The Anchorage Assembly has renamed one of the city’s parks after its first sister city, following a push from a group of local students. Students from Sand Lake Elementary School lobbied the Assembly to change the name of Sand Lake Park to Chitose Park in honor of the Japanese city.

Small ammonia leak at Kodiak seafood plant contained without incident
The Kodiak Fire Department responded to a reported ammonia leak near one of the local seafood processors off Shelikof Street on Friday morning, Aug. 9. According to an emailed statement from the department, the odor of ammonia was strongest around 517 Shelikof Street, where the Silver Bay Seafoods plant is located. Coast Guard death prompts mental health conversations at Base Kodiak
