The man police shot and killed at a gas station in Kenmore early Saturday morning has been identified as 54-year-old Michael D. Jones of Akron.

The Summit County Medical Examiner's office confirmed Jones' identity Sunday. His cause of death was gunshot wounds to the torso.

According to the initial police statement, officers were investigating a report of a stolen vehicle at a gas station in the 2200 block of East Avenue just after 1 a.m. Saturday. A police captain later said that vehicle was a U-Haul.

A woman at the scene who said she is a family member said the man had rented the U-Haul to move his belongings into a new house.

The statement does not say what transpired between Jones and the unspecified number of responding officers, only that one of the officers fired two shots at a suspect, and that the man at the scene. The statement notes a gun was found in the vehicle, but does not say whether it was involved in the incident.

The officer, who has been on the Akron force two and a half years, has been placed on paid leave, but has not been identified. The state's Bureau of Criminal Investigations will complete the investigation. A separate internal investigation will also be ongoing.
