The calendar may say August, but for Summit County's two ski resorts, it is already time to think about winter.

Work is underway at Vail Resort's two properties in northern Summit County − Boston Mills and Brandywine − for the ski season.

Vail Resorts says new LED lighting is being installed on the slopes at both resorts and also on the hills at its Alpine Valley Ski Resort in Geauga County.

The new lights, they say, will improve visibility on the slopes at night.

At Boston Mills and Brandywine, new waterlines are being installed to help improve snowmaking abilities at both resorts.

And at Boston Mills, Ski Lift No. 2 is being renovated to help improve the exit for skiers.

The Bar Deck at Boston Mills is being removed and will be replaced by a bigger one, creating more seating space.

"Our teams at Alpine Valley, Boston Mills, and Brandywine are putting in the hard work to ensure an incredible winter season ahead. From upgrading to energy-efficient LED lighting at Alpine Valley to replacing the Boston Mills Bar Deck, we're all in on making this the best season yet," said Jake Campbell, the general manager of the three resorts, in a statement. "Winter is on our minds—make sure it’s on yours too."

Vail is also working in the offseason to improve its snowmaking capabilities at its Mad River Ski Resort in central Ohio.

Season passes for the resorts are already on sale.

As for when the resorts will open for the winter season, Vail says Mother Nature will have the final say, but they typically hope to start up operations in December.
