Crash on Copley Road in Akron leaves 1 dead, others injured after police chase Tuesday

One person is dead and others are injured following a crash on Copley Road in Akron Tuesday night, police said.

Officers originally stopped a vehicle for traffic violations at about 6:47 p.m. in the 600 block of Copley Road. When officers exited their vehicles and approached the suspect vehicle, the driver took off and led police on a short chase, according to Akron police. The pursuit continued for a short time in the Copley Road area before police stopped chasing the suspect vehicle due to high speeds.

The driver of the suspect vehicle continued north on Roslyn Avenue at high speeds, running through a stop sign on Roslyn at Copley Road before driving into the path of another vehicle traveling north on Copley, causing a collision, police said. The driver then lost control of the vehicle after the initial collision and sideswiped two other vehicles before hitting a tree. The driver of the suspect vehicle, a 29-year-old male, was subsequently pronounced dead at at the scene, police reported.

The driver's name is being withheld pending further investigation. A handgun was recovered from inside the suspect vehicle, according to police.

The front seat passenger, a 30-year-old male, was transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The drivers of the three other vehicles impacted during the incident were also transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are investigating the crash, but speed of the suspect's vehicle was determined to be a contributing factor.
