    Brimfield Bread Oven in Yelp's top 100 Midwest pizza spots. See which Ohio places made it

    On Tuesday, Yelp released its list of top 100 pizza joints in the Midwest and an area favorite made the cut.

    Brimfield Bread Oven clocked in at No. 24 on the list.

    What makes the Kent bakery special is that pizza isn't the only delicious item it's known for. Owners Jud and Genevieve Smith, who started the European-style bakery nine years ago after working alongside French and German artisan bakers in Vermont, also offer various croissants, Danish, bagels, cookies and breads.

    Jud got his start in the business working at the Great Lakes Baking Co. in Hudson while attending classes at Kent State University.

    “I had no intention whatsoever of becoming a baker,” Smith told the Beacon Journal last year. “I just needed a job.”

    After three years, Smith fell in love with baking and dropped out of school to pursue it as a career.

    In a June Instagram post , the bakery posted that they were replacing their wood-fired oven, which they've had since opening.

    "It has far exceeded every expectation that we had for it, it was a beautiful, wonderful oven," Jud said in the social media video.

    He went on to point out the parts of the stove that need fixed or replaced including pits in the hearth and chimney dampers, which ultimately led to the decision to get the oven replaced entirely with a gas stove.

    "For a variety of reasons ... we are going to replace this (oven) with a gas oven, which is also a wonderful, beautiful oven that we are excited to have," Judd said.

    In a second video , Jud went into more detail about the rationale behind the decision to change the oven.

    "We knew when we built this oven that we'd have to repair or replace parts of it after a certain amount of time," he said. "A lot of people told us give or take 10 years and you have to look into at least replacing the hearth. The hearth gets really beat up on these ovens."

    He said another one of the main reasons for the change was that the business needed a bigger oven and a multi-deck gas oven offered the larger capacity he was looking for.
