    OHSAA football scores | Hoban falls to Severn Archbishop Spalding in season opener

    The Hoban football team lost a season opener for the first time in seven years Friday, 28-14 to two-time reigning Maryland state champion Severn Spalding.

    Maryland recruit Malik Washington went 23-of-27 passing for 239 yards and three touchdowns with Myles McAfee (seven catches, 14, three TDs) as his main target.

    Antonio Ledbetter (23 carries, 114 yards) led the Cavaliers on the ground.

    Ethan Roksandich went 4-of-9 passing for 59 yards and threw an interception for the Knights. Taylin Boykin caught a 12-yard touchdown pass to account for one of Hoban’s touchdowns.

    Roksandich scored from a yard out on the other score for the Division II state runners-up .

    Brayton Feister led the Knights with 50 yards on 17 carries.

    A 1-yard touchdown from Ethan Roksandich put the Knights back within striking distance. It's Spalding 28-14 with 6:39 left.

    A personal foul penalty killed momentum for Hoban and the Knights were forced to punt on their own 26. Spalding blocks the punt and the Cavaliers will take over on their 42. They lead 28-7 with 6:31 left in the third quarter.

    Spalding sputtered for one of the first times all evening and Hoban takes over down 28-7 with 8:36 left in the third quarter on its own 20.

    Washington-McAfee shows continues for Spalding against Hoban

    Malik Washington hooked up with Myles McAfee for his third receiving touchdown of the night. This one from 16 yards out on thrid-and-11. It's Spalding 28-7 over Hoban 15 seconds before halftime.

    The Cavaliers drove 85 yards in 12 plays with Terps pledge Malik Washington going in from a yard out. It's 21-7 Spalding with 3:43 left in the first quarter.

    Malik Washington showed why he's a Maryland commit when he found Malik McAfee on a 22-yard slant to push the lead for the Cavaliers out to 14-7 with 11:23 left in the second quarter.

    The Knights picked up a costly personal foul penalty to keep a Spalding drive going. The Cavaliers have it first and 10 on the Hoban 20 to start the second quarter. Game tied, 7-7,

    Hoban knots it up with Spalding

    Tylan Boykin might not be the starting quarterback this season, but the star cornerback was part of the opening score for the Knights. The senior took a lateral from Ethan Roksandich and found Jackson Callaway all alone from 12 yards out to tie things at seven with 2:09 left in the first quarter.

    After another three-and-out on defense, the Cavaliers started on their own 49-yard line but a holding call on the Hoban 24 stalled things out. It's 7-0 Spalding with 4:48 left in the first quarter

    After holding Hoban to a three-and-out, the Cavaliers rolled 53 yards in seven plays to take a 7-0 lead. Maryland commit Malik Washington hit Mylde McAfee on a 20-yard pass with 8:36 left in the first quarter to open the scoring.

    Ohio State football recruits Eli Lee, Elbert Hill highlight Hoban's top players

    As always, the Knights are one of the most talent-rich football teams in the nation. Arguably their best player is linebacker Eli Lee, an Ohio State recruit who 247 Sports ranks as Ohio’s 19th-best player .

    Tight end Tayte Crable is the 67th best player in Ohio, and he’s committed to Toledo.

    Lee isn’t the only Ohio State commit on the Knights. Junior cornerback Elbert Hill is committed to the Buckeyes, and is rated by 247 as the state’s best prospect in the 2026 class. Junior offensive tackle Sam Greer is rated as the No. 6 player, wide receiver Payton Cook the No. 11 player and linebacker Ace Brown the No. 28 player in the 2026 class.

    Malik Washington and the best players on Spalding football

    Spalding is loaded, too.

    Quarterback Malik Wahington, a Maryland commit, is the No. 6 player in the state for 2025, according to 247. Cornerback Jayden Shipps and defensive lineman Delmar White are both rated among the top 50 players in Maryland and are committed to Division I schools.

    Behind the coaches for Spalding and Hoban

    Tim Tyrrell is in his 12th season as coach for the Knights and his 23rd season overall. He has a 129-22 record at Hoban and has led the squad to the state finals nine of the last 10 seasons. He holds a 194-73 career record.

    Kyle Schmitt enters his 12th season as coach for the Cavaliers and has lead Spalding to back-to-back MIAA A state championships. Spalding has reached the state semifinals the last three seasons and are 77-29-5 under the 2022 Ravens High School Football Coach of the Year.
