    OHSAA boys soccer | Walsh Jesuit upsets 5x reigning state champion St. Ignatius

    What a way to start the weekend.

    The Walsh Jesuit boys soccer team took a 1-1 tie against St. Ignatius into overtime of the Jesuit Cup opener and then won in sudden death penalty kicks.

    Andrew Conti, Freddie Marcell, Brady Catanzarite, Noah Pellegrini, Evan Litris, Colin Locigno and Carlo Costanzo were perfect on PKs for Walsh Jesuit (2-0-1) and St. Ignatius (2-0-1) followed suit until Dom Ruggiero's attempt sailed high to give the Warriors the win.

    Carlo Costanzo is true to the right. Dom Ruggiero is high and Walsh wins 7-6 on PKs.

    Walsh Jesuit and St. Ignatius goes to penalty kicks

    Brady Catanzarite scored a goal in the first half for Walsh Jesuit. Bryce Ince-Lovelace scored for St. Ignatius and the Jesuit Cup opener will go to penalty kicks tied at one.

    Quinn Anderson is not human for Walsh Jesuit

    Anderson made two more saves from point-blank range to keep things knotted 1-1 with 6:35 remaining.

    St. Ignatius ties things up against Walsh Jesuit

    St. Ignatius finally broke through when Bryce Ince-Lovelace snuck in behind the backline and popped one into the back of the net with 15:09 left. It's 1-1 and this can go to PKs because it's the Jesuit Cup.

    Dom Ruggiero rifled a shot just under the crossbar in what looked like the equalizer for St. Ignatius. Quinn Anderson rose up and ticked it over the top to keep Walsh up a goal with 20:42 left.

    Dom Ruggiero took a cross from right and had the left side of the net empty, but his header went just left to keep Walsh up 1-0 with 25:31 left.

    The Warriors lead 1-0 at the break thanks to a goal from Brady Catanzarite and three out of this world saves by Quinn Anderson. St. Ignatius holds a 5-2 edge on shots on goal and corner kicks. The difference has been Anderson between the pipes, who has been nothing short of amazing.

    St. Ignatius has certainly picked up the pace and had a direct kick tickle into the middle of the box before it was sent away for a corner kick. The Warriors still hold onto the one-goal advantage. They even had a chance to score again, but a Brady Catanzarite shot chipped off the near post. Walsh up 1-0 with 31:43 left.

    Quinn Anderson comes up big for Walsh Jesuit against St. Ignatius

    Warriors keeper Quinn Anderson was whistled for a foul in the box, but made a save on the ensuing penalty kick and then stuffed the follow-up to keep Walsh ahead 1-0 with 2:34 left before the break.

    Cullen O'Connor collected a ball in the middle and poked it ahead to a streaking Brady Catanzarite, who beat a charging Sean Gerba to give the Warriors the lead with 6:24 left before halftime.

    Brady Catanzarite sent a cross through the goal mouth that beat keeper Sean Gerba. Unfortunately, no one was on the other end for the Warriors and played went the other way after two corner kicks.

    St. Ignatius catches Walsh Jesuit sleeping, just misses opportunity

    The Cats sent a through ball to the left post that Bryce Ince-Lovelace got good leather on. Quinn Anderson showed his quicks and got over to the post to get a glove on in and keep it scoreless with 18:03 left before recess.

    A free kick from 30 yards out was serviced to Bryce Ince-Lovelace, who got a head on it but missed missed just right. Seconds later, he had another chance. The shot was headed for the lower 90 on the right, but Quinn Anderson got a paw on it for the corner kick. Scoreless 28:35 left before intermission.

    Both Walsh Jesuit and St. Ignatius threaten early

    The Warriors have been in deep twice behind the St. Ignatius defense, but couldn't muster a shot on frame. Sam Minadeo earned a corner kick for the Wildcats but keeper Quinn Anderson snuffed the cross. 35 minutes left still scoreless.

    Players to watch on St. Ignatius

    Marty McLaughlin leads the Wildcats, who have won five Division I state titles in a row. The Ohio Stat commit, was second-team All-Ohio and first-team all-Greater Cleveland last year, helping the Wildcats (17-3-3) win their 13th state championship overall. He has seven career goals and 13 assists.

    Teammate Justis Olorunto is also an Ohio State commit and was second-team All-Ohio last season. He was part of a defense that allowed just 22 goals last season and logged 10 shutouts.

    Players to watch on Walsh Jesuit

    Goalkeeper Quinn Anderson is a returning Division I honorable Greater Akron all-district selection for the two-time reigning district champs and returning regional finalists. He recorded 14 shutouts last season and boasted a 0.725 goals against average for the district champion Warriors. His 24 career clean sheets are three off the school record.

    Senior midfielder Brady Cantanzarite is a returning Division I first-team Greater Akron all-district selection, Crown Conference Player of the Year and Top Drawer Soccer three-star recruit. He scored nine goals and added 17 assists last season.

    Teammate Freddie Marcell will pick up even more of the offense after a sophomore season where he scored seven goals and registered 11 assists last season and has nine goals and 19 assists in his career.
