The recent openings are part of the Akron Beltway Improvements project , a $160 million dollar project that started in 2021. The project includes:

    • Pavement replacement and the addition of lanes on I-77 between U.S. 224 and State Route 8
    • Pavement replacement on I-76/I-77 from Princeton Ave. to the I-77/State Route 261 interchange
    • Pavement replacement on I-76, I-77 and State Route 8 at the Central Interchange.
    • Resurfacing of State Route 8
    • The addition of a southbound lane on State Route 8 between Carroll St. and Beacon St.
    • The re-alignment of left hand turn ramps (I-76 westbound to I-77 southbound and I-76 eastbound to State Route 8 northbound)

The project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2025.

I’ve heard the nickname for this central interchange is “the mixing bowl”. Another thing I discovered a year or so ago. There was a time ODOT was considering a loop around the city like 275 in Cincinnati.

it's terrible if you are trying to get on 224 west they have it blocked off by Southfield exit and you can't get on the 224 w on Main St or the exit by Waterloo. have to drive to Barberton then more.road.constructions. ugh
