Holy cannoli. Did you know that there are 329 D.O.C.’s or wine regions in Italy? Most of us are familiar with the Barolo, Brunello, and Chianti D.O.C.’s.

Thanks to Roccolo del Lago, I can now add Bardolino Classico to my growing list of favorites.  And, hopefully, yours too!

D.O.C.’s or Denominazione di Origine Controllata, simply translates to Controlled Designation of Origin. Don’t feel bad if you haven’t heard of Bardolino.  I’ve even been to Lake Garda and never had this wine.

Bardolino is located on the eastern shores of Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy. In my defense, I was on the west side of the lake. Just saying. It's a big, big lake.

This wine is made from 100% organic corvina and rondinella grapes that are hand harvested in the villages of Saline and Colombare di Lazise. Corvina and rondinella are also two of the four grapes used to make Amarone, one of the prized wines of the Veneto region in Northern Italy.

At $10.99, this bottle is priced to be your everyday “house red.” It's perfect to have on hand for when your wine-guzzling neighbor stops over for a pop-in visit.

This wine loves Italian food and red sauce as much as I do. The strawberry and ripe red raspberry flavors are a thing of beauty with a carry-out order of Altieri’s lasagna rollups and a side of their heavenly meatballs. Mama, Mia! I really love their sauce.

The next day I had a glass of this Lake Garda crowd pleaser with a few leftover pepperoni pizza slices from Vaccaro’s Trattoria. Not sure what you are serving at your next tailgate party, but I'll bet you a burger and a slab of ribs that this wine will definitely cover your spread.

Buy this wine at Beau’s Market in Copley, Mustard Seed Market in Montrose, Krieger’s Market in Cuyahoga Falls, DeVitis Italian Market on North Hill, HomeBuys in North Canton, Top Shelf of Ohio in Jackson Township, Myers Lake Beverage and DioGuardini's Italian Market & Deli in Canton.
