Toso Estate's Malbec is a winner with meats and cheeses at tailgate parties

It’s never too late to recommend a good wine, but I really sailed in on the last pickle boat with this week's selection. The Akron Pickle Fest was Aug. 11. Had I sampled the 2022 Toso Estate Malbec beforehand, I would’ve opened a wine tasting station and poured this wonderful Argentinian wine to pair with all of the pickle deliciousness.

Beau’s Market & Deli manager Kennedy Armour twisted open a bottle and poured me a glass. It was love at first sip. Then someone from the kitchen brought us a slice of pickle pizza topped with crunchy pickle chips. The pizza was wonderful, however, I was flabbergasted at how well the wine paired with it.

Pascual Toso, founded in 1890, is one of Argentina’s oldest wineries and is located in the Mendoza region's Maipu district. Napa Valley rock star Paul Hobbs is a consulting winemaker, which makes this bottle even more special in my book.

Argentina is famous for producing quality beef, and it goes without saying that your favorite cut of steak or sirloin burger will be the perfect companion for this wine.

I decided to try this $14.99 bottle while tailgating with my nephews during the Browns home opener. They got "Toso"- ed around by the Cowboys for sure. But the wine was fantastic with a festive hunk of Saint Anne’s Ohio A-2 Guernsey cheddar cheese shaped like the Buckeye state from Beau’s Market in Copley. I wouldn’t have considered this Malbec a tailgate wine, however, it went nicely with my nephew’s smoked barbecued chicken and pork, mac and cheese, baked beans, plus guacamole with chips and salsa.

Buy this wine at Beau’s Market in Copley, Mustard Seed Market in Montrose, Krieger’s Market in Cuyahoga Falls, Cornerstone Market in Munroe Falls or Meyers Lake Beverage in Canton.
