A shelter-in-place warning had been in effect Wednesday morning due to an escaped inmate Portage County, according to the Portage County Sheriff's Office.

The inmate has been taken into custody without incident, the sheriff's office reported. The 31-year-old white male was last seen wearing an orange and white striped jumpsuit and a red hat.

Local schools in the area of Industrial Parkway near the eCheck/ODOT building off of St. Rt. 44 had been placed in lock down and the sheriff's office had urged nearby residents and businesses to lock up as well.

A message was sent to James A. Garfield school district parents assuring them that students in the district are safe and that the police are monitoring the situation closely.

"We were made aware of an escaped convict in the Rootstown area," the message read. "The authorities will let us know if we need to take any further action. All JAG students are safe and in NO harm at this time."
