Ohio just chalked up another unusual bird sighting.

On the heels of the black-bellied whistling-duck and roseate tern comes the American avocet .

Here's where you might catch a glimpse of it.

American avocet spotted at Deer Creek Reservoir near Alliance in Stark County

On Thursday, the Ohio Division of Wildlife, part of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, posted a "rare bird alert" to Facebook, announcing that an American avocet had been spotted at Deer Creek Reservoir.

The bird was spotted near Alliance at Deer Creek Reservoir , part of the Stark Parks system in Stark County, Ohio, about 25 miles east of Akron.

    All about the American avocet

The American avocet can be found in the western United States, where they migrate south for the winter to Mexico, or along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, according to All About Birds .

The Division of Wildlife says the one at Deer Creek Reservoir is likely off-course for its fall migration.

They breed near wetlands in the interior North America, per All About Birds. During the winter, many of them head to coastal lagoons, salt ponds and mudflats. The Division of Wildlife says they are not known to breed in Ohio.

American avocet joins parade of rare, unusual birds in Ohio, including black-bellied whistling-duck and roseate tern

It's been a year for unusual bird sightings in the Buckeye State.

In August, the Division of Wildlife reported that black-bellied whistling-ducks, normally found around the US-Mexico border, were nesting in Northeast Ohio . They were spotted with ducklings in Wayne County. Previously, a pair of the ducks were confirmed to have been nesting in a small pond on a Wayne County farm in 2022, according to the Columbus Dispatch .

And in July, a roseate tern, normally found along the Atlantic Coast of the U.S. as well as the Caribbean, was spotted along the shores of Lake Erie in Huron . It was the first documented sighting of the bird in the state, said Jamey Emmert, avian education coordinator for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. It's very unusual to find this coastal bird so far inland, Emmert said. The tern attracted scores of birdwatchers during its stay in the state.
