Taking on an Akron City Series team for the second straight week, Archbishop Hoban (3-1) rode its defense again to victory.
Unlike its Week 3 rout of Buchtel, the Knights did not force 10 turnovers, but kept Akron East (1-3) locked in its own end most the night. The result was a 42-6 Hoban win Friday at Yost Stadium at Ellet.
"Defense is something in the early season that we always try to hang our hat on," said Hoban coach Tyrrell. "We'll mature as we go and we'll get better as well go."
Hoban focused on shutting down East's running game, holding the Dragons were held to minus-33 yards rushing. East running back Ziaire Stevens was mobbed all night, finishing with minus-23 yards rushing.
Meanwhile, Hoban went to a two-headed quarterback system on offense. Both Trent Hayden and Ethan Roksandich shined.
"They're both talented at certain things," Tyrrell said. "Why not play someone like that?"
Hayden showed off his arm in the first half, going 3-of-4 for 46 yards and two touchdowns. Roksandich went 5-of-8 for 71 yards, but was most dangerous with his legs.
Roksandich ran in three rushing TDs of two, 10 and 3 yards, often running over East defenders in the process.
Hoban's rushing attack was led by La'Near Folk, who ran 15 times for 64 yards and a TD.
East had its moments, including a defensive stop on fourth-and-1 in the first quarter. The Dragons opened the second half with a scoring drive, as quarterback Marlin Engram hit Donte Swain Jr. with a 29-yard TD pass.
Engram finished 4-of-11 for 77 yards and TD.
Tyrell said he was joy for Hoban to play back-to-back against City Series opposition.
"It's awesome," he said. "Both team are on top of the City Series and they're well coached. Our kids know their kids and its really special for the kids involved."
The Knights answered the Dragon's first touchdown with power running - from the quarterback.
Hoban QB Ethan Roksandich ran in his second TD of the game, running over an East defender to score from 10 yards out. Jeremy Hummel hits the PAT to make 35-6 Hoban with 4:59 left in the third quarter.
On the first drive of the second half, quarterback Marlin Engram completed three passes. The last of these was a 29-yard catch and run by Donte Swain Jr. to get score the touchdown. East's pass attempt on the two-point conversion fell incomplete, but the Dragons are on the board, down 28-6 with 9:01 left in the third quarter.
Hoban has won the field position battle in the first half and has a 28-0 advantage over the Dragons at the half. East will receive the second-half kickoff.
Another short field leads to another Knights touchdown, Elbert Hill returned a short punt back to the East 9.
Quarterback Ethan Roksandich completed the drive, plunging in with a 2-yard TD run. Jeremy Hammel hits the PAT to make it 28-0 Hoban with 1:47 left in the first half.
East found some offense on its last drive, as quarterback Martin Engram hit Braylon Bush with a 26-yard go route. However, the drive stalled just inside Hoban territory and the Dragons punted. It's 14-0 Hoban with under 10 minutes left in the first half.
The entire first quarter was played in East's half of the field, but the Dragons are looking to change that. East has second and 13 at its own 25, trailing Hoban 14-0 after one quarter.
Hoban's Owen Turner recovered a fumble on a bad handoff exchange at the East 5 yard line.
On the next play, Hoban went to its three-man I and running back La'Near Folk runs in a 5-yard TD off a sweep to the left. Hammel hits the PAT to make it 14-0 Hoban with 2:27 left in the first quarter.
