Hudson and Walsh Jesuit each came in undefeated Monday when they clashed at John Kissner Field.
The game between them lived up to the hype.
Walsh Jesuit's Reagan Pentz scored the winning goal in the 72nd minute — just 30 seconds after Hudson had equalized. The Warriors (9-0) hung on for a 3-2 win over the Explorers (9-1).
"I thought Hudson had an awesome game plan," said Walsh coach Javier Iriart. "That's the beauty of this sport. You can play the game anyway your want to play it. It just shows that on any given day, the best team in Northeast Ohio, whether it's Hudson, whether it's Walsh, whether it's Strongsville can beat anyone."
The game pitted Walsh's possession offense against Hudson's high press. While each team had their chances, Hudson struck first in the 26th minute.
Hudson pressed Walsh into its own box, forcing a turnover from Warrior goalie Ava DeBolt. Hudson's Peyton Pierce stole the pass and smashed the ball into the net.
"We were able to keep their ball in their half for quite some time," said Hudson coach Josh Huettich. "We knew it was going to be back and forth. They did a good job converting the opportunities that they got. I couldn't be happier of the girls effort tonight."
Walsh was able to find quick answers throughout the game.
In the 31st minute, Pentz teed up a free kick and sent it towards the back post. The ball bounced off a couple players before Walsh's Lauren Sibel got to the loose ball and put it home from a tight angle.
Walsh took the lead in the 37th minute, thanks some individual brilliance from All-Ohioan Hannah Pachan. Pachan took the ball off her chest, turned in the box, split a pair of defenders and lofted a shot into the net, giving Walsh a 2-1 halftime lead.
Hudson's pressure kept Warriors stuck in their own end for most of the second half. In the 73rd minute, the Explorers were rewarded after another turnover.
A diagonal ball across the box found Hudson forward Maya Lake, who cut inside and sent a curling shot just inside the far post to tie it at 2-2.
Walsh needed just 30 seconds to reply. Rushing forward off the kickoff, Pachan unleashed a long shot but was denied by the post.
Pentz kept the ball alive off the rebound, fended off a Hudson defender and smashed a low shot home for hte game winner.
"That's just how our mindset has been throughout my four years here," Pentz said. "We play with pride and we know that if we go down, we're going to get back up. It shouldn't take goals to get us motivated, but I think that kicked us in the butt a little bit."
Walsh finished with a 9-4 edge in shots on goal, while Hudson had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. DeBolt had one save, while Hudson keeper Samantha Rosenberg had five. The Explorers gave up three goals Monday after surrendering only three goal in its first nine games.
The Warriors had to hang on late, but Walsh moves to 9-0 with a 3-2 win over Hudson at Kissner Field. Hudson suffers its first loss (10-1) as it gives up multiple goals for the first time this season.
Hudson found the equalizer with a nice curling shot from the left side of the box to make it 2-2.
Off the ensuing kickoff, Walsh surged forward and had a shot rattle off the post. Reagan Pentz collected the loose ball and smashed it home. Walsh leads 3-2 with 5 minutes left in the game.
Hudson with its best chance of the second half, as Maya Lake collected a ball on the back post. However, Walsh goalie Ava DeBolt with a close save to deny her. DeBolt also grabbed the ensuing corner kick. Walsh still leading 2-1 with 10 minutes left in the game.
Hudson's high press is dictated the pace early in the second half, but no shots on goal yet. Walsh under pressure but still leading 2-1 in the 54th minute.
Walsh Jesuit leads Hudson 2-1 off goals from Lauren Sibel (31st minute) and Hannah Pachan (37th) after the Explorers' Peyton Pierce opened the scoring the 26th minute. Walsh has a 4-2 edge in shots on goal, while Hudson leads 3-0 in corner kicks. Hudson goalie Samantha Rosenberg with two saves as the Explorers have given up two goals in a gam for the first time this season.
Walsh's All-Ohio captain came up with a moment of magic to give Walsh the lead.
Hannah Pachan took a ball off the chest and turned inside the box. Between two defenders, Pachan lofted a ball into the far corner of the net. Walsh takes the lead 2-1 in the 37th minute.
Reagan Pentz took a free kick from the left side and sent it to the back post. The ball bounced off a couple players, but Lauren Sibel struck the loose ball home from a tight angle. Walsh makes it 1-1 in the 31st minute, as its only the fourth goal Hudson has given up this season.

Peyton Pierce intercepted a pass from Walsh goaltender Ava DeBolt and smashes it into the net. Hudson takes a 1-0 lead, as Walsh gives up only its fifth goal this season.
