65-year-old man arrested after SWAT standoff in connection to Sherbondy Hill shooting

A 65-year-old man wanted in connection to a shooting Wednesday morning was apprehended in Sherbondy Hill after a brief standoff with SWAT, according to an Akron police statement.

Officers originally responded to reports of a shooting at about 1:50 a.m. at a residence in the 700 block of Russell Avenue. Upon arrival, police located a 36-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General with non-life-threatening injuries.

After a preliminary investigation, officers identified the suspect, who reportedly fired multiple shots into the residence and fled the scene shortly after. Officers tracked the suspect to a home in the 800 block of Raymond Street, locating his vehicle in the backyard.

After initial attempts to convince the suspect to come out of the house and surrender were unsuccessful, SWAT was called to the scene, police noted. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody after climbing out of a second-story window.

The suspect was charged with felonious assault in connection to the shooting. Police later determined the suspect and the victim knew each other, and the shooting may have resulted from an ongoing dispute.
