Which buildings are set to be demolished in Summit County? Here's the list

More than 100 abandoned and dilapidated buildings in Summit County will soon be razed thanks to a fifth round of recently announced government funding.

Gov. Mike DeWine's administration announced Friday that $50 million of funding was awarded for the demolition of various sites in Ohio through the Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program and Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program. Nearly $23 million of these funds will be utilized for projects in Summit County.

Some notable sites in Akron whose demolition will be funded through the programs include the former St. Thomas Hospital and Akron Public Schools administration buildings, as well as the Firestone headquarters and what used to be Rankin Elementary.

A former hotel in Boston Heights is scheduled to be torn down, as well the former Edwin Shaw Hospital building in Lakemore.

This program was created to stimulate economic development in areas where opportunities may be blocked by these old sites, according to the press release .
