Daylight saving time is almost over, meaning Ohioans can rest assured that earlier sunrises and sunsets are on their way.

Daylight saving will end Nov. 3, when clocks will fall backward one hour to make up for clocks being sprung forward in March.

The result of the extra hour will be an earlier sunset, as the impending winter months will continue to shorten the days. The sunrise will also be earlier than normal , likely in the 6 a.m. hour.

After clocks are moved backward in November, daylight will continue to decrease until the winter solstice, which will be on Dec. 21. This will be the shortest day of the year in most locations.

    What is daylight saving time?

Daylight saving time received official statewide starting and ending times with the passing of the Uniform Time Act in 1966. Daylight saving time originally began on the last Sunday of April and ran through the last Sunday of October, but this was changed to the current schedule of the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November in 2005.

The first iteration of a sort of daylight saving time was in the early 1900s, when the Standard Time Act was passed as a means of saving energy during wartime.

When will Ohio turn back their clocks? When is the time change in 2024?

Ohioans can set their clocks back along with other participating states at 2 a.m. Nov. 3. Most smartphone users should see their clocks adjust to the daylight saving time automatically, but other clocks will likely need to be set back manually.

What does the end of daylight saving time mean for Ohioans?

For many Ohioans, the end of daylight saving time this November may translate to an extra hour of sleep, As the setting back of clocks at 2 a.m. will make for a longer night than usual.

    Is daylight saving time beneficial?

The modern age of technology has made daylight saving time less effective at conserving energy than in the past, and there are also studies linking daylight saving time to potential health risks . There has been a recent effort to make daylight saving time permanent with the Sunshine Protection Act that was passed by the U.S. Senate in 2022, but this bill didn't make it past the House of Representatives, so little is known about what the future might hold for daylight saving time.

When is daylight saving time in 2025?

Daylight saving time is set to begin Sunday, March 9, for the 2025 year and end Nov. 2.
