After Jets fire Robert Saleh, could Walsh legend, Browns consultant Mike Vrabel get job?

The New York Jets decided on a major shakeup within the organization Tuesday morning when owner Woody Johnson opted to fire head coach Robert Saleh following an underwhelming 2-3 start to the season.

Johnson released a statement saying that defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of this season.

Ulbrich could very well earn the head coaching job beyond this season if things go well as interim coach, but speculation already abounds as to who could take over the Jets job moving forward.

Some coaching names that have been floated already are six-time Super Bowl champ and former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick and Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores.

Another name that will be very familiar to the Akron area and Northeast Ohio generally is former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel.

Vrabel, a Walsh Jesuit and Ohio State product, didn't land a new head coaching gig after being let go by Tennessee.

A three-time Super Bowl champion as a player, Vrabel took on a role with the Cleveland Browns as a coaching and personnel consultant in March. His high school alma mater Walsh Jesuit honored him with a jersey retirement ceremony last month.

Though he has a role within the Browns organization, Cleveland has floundered this season.

Embattled quarterback Deshaun Watson has struggled on the field and faced yet another sexual assault allegation that has since been settled off the field.

Some power rankings even put the Browns dead last in the entire NFL after their woeful 1-4 start to the season.

All that to say, Vrabel might be enticed by an opportunity for another head coaching gig despite his ties to the Northeast Ohio area as the Browns' outlook with Watson under center continues to look bleak.

As the Jets struggle to separate themselves from other NFL teams despite having future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers under center, the next coaching hire will be crucial for Johnson and Co. moving forward.

Perhaps Vrabel will ultimately be that choice.
