Cleveland Guardians ALCS roster set; Pedro Avila is on, Angel Martinez is off vs. Yankees

NEW YORK — The Guardians have announced the roster they'll bring with them into the American League Championship Series to face the New York Yankees .

When setting their ALDS roster to face the Detroit Tigers , the Guardians chose to carry an extra position player and only 12 pitchers. They knew the added pinch-hitting flexibility would be valuable against the Tigers' "pitching chaos" strategy, so Cleveland adjusted its plans from how it normally would have constructed the roster.

In preparation for the Yankees, and for a best-of-seven series, the Guardians have adjusted again, making one change from the ALDS roster, as they'll now carry 13 pitchers. Pedro Avila, who was left off the ALDS roster, will now be available out of the bullpen in place of Angel Martinez, who was the extra utility man on the bench. That was originally set to be Tyler Freeman until an oblique injury took him out.
