NEW YORK — The road to the World Series continued for the Guardians in the Big Apple. And the Guardians will have to come from behind to win the American League Championship Series.
The No. 1 seed New York Yankees won the opener 5-2 against the No. 2 Guardians for a 1-0 series lead.
The Yankees had a few days to rest after beating the Kansas City Royals 3-1 in their ALDS. The Guardians are fresh off an emotional Game 5 win over the Detroit Tigers that had Progressive Field quite literally shaking as Lane Thomas rounded the bases after a grand slam .
Here's how Game 1 unfolded through out live updates and analysis.
The Yankees have won Game 1 of the ALCS, 5-2. Closer Luke Weaver finished both the eighth and ninth innings.
Tanner Bibee will take the mound opposite Gerrit Cole in Game 2 Tuesday night.
After the obstruction play, Steven Kwan lined a single to the left side that scored a run, making it 5-2. Tim Hill was angry on the mound and slammed down the rosin bag.
Kwan now has an 11-game hit streak in the postseason, which is a franchise record.
The Yankees then turned to Luke Weaver, who retired both Will Brennan (strikeout) and Jose Ramirez (broken-bat groundout).
With Andres Gimenez on first after a single, Brayan Rocchio grounded a ball to the right side that got past Anthony Rizzo. As Rocchio rounded first, he ran into Tim Hill, who was standing in the base line. The throw came into first base, and Rocchio was tagged out, but after the umpires held a conference in the infield, it was determined that Rocchio would be awarded second base for the obstruction.
Boone wasn't happy, and fans began a chant involving a word we can't type here.
When Stanton really gets into one, it just has a different sound off the bat.
Stanton absolutely drilled a line-drive home run off Erik Sabrowski at 114.3 mph. It's 5-1 Yankees in the bottom of the seventh.
That was a missile. Stanton has had a tremendous postseason.
Carlos Rodon's night is done. He'll finish with one earned run via Rocchio's home run and nine strikeouts in six innings.
Brayan Rocchio's red-hot October continues.
Rocchio absolutely launched a solo home run to left field that cut the Yankees lead to 4-1 in the sixth. Rocchio now has at least one hit in all six Guardians postseason games. He's provided a huge boost at the bottom of the order.
Rocchio is now tied for the longest hit streak for a Cleveland hitter to begin a postseason career with Lonnie Chisenhall and Jhonny Peralta.
The Yankees bullpen now has some activity.
The Guardians pitching staff finally had an easy inning, as Avila went 1-2-3 in the fifth. The Guardians lineup still has work to do.
Carlos Rodon is looking stronger and stronger as his outing continues. Through five innings, he's given up just two hits and struck out nine.
It's been close to a worst-case scenario for the Guardians.
Aaron Judge hit a high sacrifice fly to center field, and it's now 4-0 Yankees in the fourth inning. The Guardians have some work to do against Rodon.
Joey Cantillo's night is done, and it was a rough one for the rookie.
Yet another wild pitch put a runner on third, and Cantillo then walked Juan Soto to put runners on the corners for Judge wit nobody out in the fourth. Pedro Avila will come in to face Judge in a matchup the Guardians need to win.
And with Game 2 tomorrow night, Cleveland needs some length from Avila.
It was a bad sign for Cleveland when Joey Cantillo's first warm-up pitch ended up going to the backstop.
His third actual pitch also got away from catcher Bo Naylor, which allowed Aaron Judge to score from third. The next pitch walked Anthony Rizzo to again load the bases for Alex Verdugo.
Another Cantillo wild pitch with Verdugo up to bat gave the Yankees another run, this time scoring Giancarlo Stanton.
It's 3-0 Yankees.
The Guardians can't afford to let this inning get oufof hand, and Alex Cobb's day is done.
The Yankees loaded the bases with two outs and Anthony Rizzo walking to the plate (with one of the best walk-up songs in the majors, by the way). Cobb's day is done after 2 2/3 innings. Joey Cantillo will enter the game in a massively important situation.
The Yankees have struck first.
Alex Cobb left a 2-1 sinker over the middle of the plate, and Juan Soto crushed it for a solo home run that was sent to the bullpen in right-center field.
It's 1-0 Yankees. New York pecked away with four singles but couldn't scratch a run across the plate in the first two innings. Soto did just that with one swing in the third.
The Yankees put runners on the corners with two outs for Gleyber Torres, who grounded into an inning-ending forceout. The Yankees have already stranded four runners tonight. Alex Cobb hasn't looked particularly sharp, but he's kept the Yankees off the board, which is what matters for Cleveland.
Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce seen at Guardians-Yankees ALCS Game 1
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce has been spotted at Yankee Stadium.
The Guardians again tallied a single in the second inning, this one from Jhonkensy Noel, but Rodon again worked around it to retire the side.
The Guardians and Yankees will go to the bottom of the second still looking for the series' first run.
Alex Cobb worked into and then out of trouble in the first inning.
Gleyber Torres and Juan Soto opened the first inning with back-to-back singles, but Cobb recovered nicely, striking out Aaron Judge looking and with two outs getting Giancarlo Stanton to hit a flyout to left field.
It's still scoreless in New York. And yes, Taylor Swift is here.
David Fry singled off Yankees lefty Carlos Rodon and later advanced to second base on a wild pitch, but the Guardians couldn't bring him home, as Rodon struck out Lane Thomas to end the first inning.
