An old adage says you can't win a golf tournament on day one, but you can certainly lose it.

Much of the Greater Akron contingent at the Division I state golf tournament took that advice to heart Monday at NCR Country Club in Kettering.

On the South Course at NCR, Archbishop Hoban found itself in a familiar position . The defending state runner-up was second in the boys team with a round of 295, just three strokes behind Olentangy Liberty for the lead at the end of the first round.

Hudson had a solid day, as the Explorers were tied with Dublin Jerome in fourth place at 307.

All five Hoban golfers shot below 80.

Chris Pollak led Hoban with a 1-under round of 71. He was three strokes behind St. Xavier's Michael Stagnaro, who led with a 2-under 68.

Hoban also got a 73 from Braden Herstich, a 74 from Brett Bagatti and 78s from Ray Dress and Ben Berridge.

Meanwhile, the Fauver brothers again led Hudson. Ben Fauver shot a 2-over 72, and Sam Fauver was 4 over at 74 at the end of round one.

Hudson also got rounds of 78 from Jerry Du, 79 from Adam Ruffer and 84 from Barrett Atchison.

Among the individuals, Kent Roosevelt's Liam Curtis also was in medalist contention. He shot a 1-over 71 with birdies on Nos. 16 and 18.

Finally, Revere's Tommy Kinder played the first state round for the Minutemen in 17 years. He shot a round of 80.

Hoban will tee off at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday on No. 1, while Hudson will start at 9 a.m. on No. 1.

Meanwhile on the North Course at NCR, Highland and Walsh Jesuit had differing fortunes on day one.

Led by Elizabeth Coleman , Highland was third in the team race after a 35-over round of 315. Magnificat led the team race with a 308, and Dublin Jerome was second at 313.

Coleman also put herself in contention in the girls individual race with a 1-over round of 71 — just one stroke behind leader Meadow Tian of Olentangy.

Highland also got rounds of 74 from Avery Albright, 82 from Kendall Sprutte, 88 from Mirabella Shelton and 92 from Myley Tylicki.

In its first trip to state in a decade, Walsh Jesuit struggled with a round of 351. Sarah Vojtko and Yumi Kohara each shot rounds of 82, while Gianna Rodenhauser (93), Colleen Stadler (94) and Vivian Eich (95) also competed.

Highland will tee off at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday on No. 1, and Walsh tees off at 9 a.m. on No. 10.
