Friday's showdown between Walsh Jesuit and Brunswick was a classic case of ball control vs. offensive efficiency.
Because Brunswick dominated time of possession, Walsh only got six offensive drives. The Warriors scored on all of them.
Walsh improved to 9-0 with a 38-7 win at Brunswick (3-6). The Warriors have a chance for their first 10-0 regular season since 1998.
"If you look at the time of possession, they dominated us," said. Walsh quarterback Keller Moten. They had seven or eight minute drives. That's demoralizing as an offense. Fortunately, we scored on every drive and we were ready for it."
Walsh didn't help itself with 11 penalties for 95 yards. One spate of those penalties had Walsh facing third and goal from its own 48 late in the third quarter.
"Third and 52. We don't have too many plays for that," Moten said. "We had a designed quarterback run and I was able to make some moves. My coach just told me go make a play."
Moten ran for 47 yards down to the Brunswick 5. On the next play, he found Milan Parris open in the back of the end zon for his second passing touchdown of the night.
Moten hit Dominic Romanini on a 25-yard post route earlier in the game. He finished 12-of-18 for 163 yards and 3 TDs, along with 85 yards rushing and 1 TD.
"We had a three possessions in the first half and we had a field goal and two touchdowns," said Walsh coach Nick Alexander. "It's 17-7 and we're looking around wondering offensively, what we had to do. Caden Carter's interception changed the momentum of that game."
Carter's interception early in the third quarter set up Moten for a 17-yard TD run to make it 24-7.
Walsh also got a 2-yard TD run from Lucas Weaver in the second quarter and a 9-yard TD run from Carlos Smith in the fourth. Freddie Marcell hit a 35-yard field goal to open the scoring.
For all its possession, Brunswick managed only one score. Quarterback Sean Barnett ran in an 11-yard TD run early in the second quarter, but the Blue Devils didn't get into the red zone after that.
Despite more penalties, Walsh Jesuit found the end zone again to invoke the running clock rule. Carlos Smith ran in a 9-yard TD run and Freddie Marcell hit the PAT to make it 38-7 Walsh with 4:19 left in the game.
Following the injury timeout, Walsh Jesuit faced third and goal at its own 48 due to trio of penalties. Keller Moten answered that with a 47-yard run down to the Brunswick 5.
On fourth and goal, Moten found Milan Parris for a 5-yard TD. Freddie Marcell hits the PAT to make it 31-7 with 1:11 left in the third quarter.
Walsh leads 31-7 after three quarters. Brunswick with 3rd and 10 at its own 9 to start the fourth quarter.
The Brunswick-Walsh Jesuit game has come to a stop as a Blue Devil player is down on the far sideline and is being transported via ambulance.
Both teams assembled for a moment of prayer in the center of the field. When/if we resume play, Walsh will have third and goal with 2:11 left in the third quarter.
Walsh Jesuit took advantage of the game's first turnover.
Caden Carter jumped an out route to intercept Brunswick's Sean Barnett. He returned the ball all the way to the Brunswick 17.
On the next play, Warriors quarterback Keller Moten ran in a 17-yard TD. Freddie Marcell hits the PAT to make it 24-7 Warriors with 9:54 left in the third quarter..
After giving up a long drive, Walsh Jesuit gave Brunswick a taste of its own medicine.
The Warriors engaged in a 15-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 2-yard TD run by Lucas Weaver. Freddie Marcel hits to the PAT to make it 17-7 with 51 seconds left in the first half.
Brunswick has been winning the time of possession battle and they took advantage of a long drive on their second drive.
Quarterback Sean Barnett ran a read option play for an 11-yard TD run. Vincezo DiTeodoro hits the PAT to make it 10-7 Walsh with 5:54 left in the first half.
Walsh Jesuit has been shooting itself in the foot with fourth penalties in the first quarter. However, Keller Moten still can sling the ball.
Motten hit Dominic Romanini on a perfect post route, leading to a 25-yard TD pass. Freddie Marcell hits the PAT to make it 10-0 Walsh with 26 seconds left in the first quarter.
Walsh Jesuit had a drive going off the opening kickoff into the red zone, but stalled. Freddie Marcell comes in and boots a 35-yard field goal to open the scoring. Walsh leads 3-0 with 10:03 left in the first quarter.
What to watch between Walsh Jesuit and Brunswick
Walsh Jesuit answered whether it would have any letdown after its first win over Archbishop Hoban in more than a decade. The Warriors put up a season-high 63 points in its win at NDCL … Quarterback Keller Moten has been the driving force behind Walsh's offense all year, but he has plenty of weapons around him. Wide receivers Aiden Henry and Milan Parris are a difficult matchup for any defense. … The Blue Devils have already equalled their win total from last season, but saw a three-game winning end in Week 8 vs. Mentor. Brunswick will be playing its second undefeated team in as many weeks. … Heading into Week 8, quarterback Sean Barnett leads the Blue Devils with 90-of-172 passing for 1,089 yards with four TDs and five interceptions. His favorite target is Hayden Swarm, who has 31 catches for 409 yards and three TDs. … Cooper Neel leads Brunswick with 332 yards rushing and six TDs.
