CLEVELAND — The Guardians played for their playoff lives Saturday night in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series .

With their backs against the wall, the Guardians hoped to force the series back to New York for Game 6 and potentially 7. That looked like a possibility when they led early Saturday . But the Yankees rallied with a big home run and won it in the 10th with an even bigger homer, and the Guardians only could watch the Yankees celebrate punching their ticket to the World Series.

The Yankees are going to the World Series after beating the Guardians 5-2 in extra innings in Saturday's Game 5.

The Guardians' surprising, incredible season comes to an end three wins short of a trip to the World Series.

Juan Soto home run gives Yankees ALCS Game 5 lead over Guardians

Juan Soto might have just sent the Yankees to the World Series.

After fouling off several pitches in a row from Hunter Gaddis, Juan Soto crushed a fastball over the centerfield wall for a three-run home run that gives the Yankees a 5-2 lead in the 10th inning.

The Yankees are three outs away from clinching the ALCS. The Guardians will have the top of the order up against Luke Weaver.

And the Brayan Rocchio error that extended the inning to Soto looms large.

ALCS Game 5 score: Guardians, Yankees headed to extra innings

For the second time in three games, the Guardians and Yankees will head to extra innings. Hunter Gaddis is entering the game to pitch for Cleveland.

Emmanuel Clase retires Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton; Brayan Rocchio makes good play to end 9th inning

Emmanuel Clase got through the ninth inning, retiring Aaron Judge on a flyout and striking out Giancarlo Stanton on all cutters. Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled to right field, but Oswaldo Cabrera grounded into a forceout on a nice play by Brayan Rocchio at shortstop.

The Guardians will have a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth. Bo Naylor is due up.

Guardians, Yankees head to 9th inning of ALCS Game 5 tied; Emmanuel Clase entering

Jhonkensy Noel struck out with a runner on first to end the eighth inning, and the Guardians and Yankees will head to the ninth inning of Game 5 tied 2-2.

Emmanuel Clase is entering the game. His first two hitters: Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.

Tim Herrin gets double play to end inning; Guardians, Yankees score

Tim Herrin got Austin Wells, who has not looked good this series, to ground into an inning-ending double play.

It's tied 2-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh. Tim Hill is still in the game for the Yankees.

Guardians, Yankees tied in ALCS Game 5 heading to 7th inning

Tim Hill got a doubleplay ball off the bat of Andres Gimenez, and the Guardians and Yankees will head to the top of the seventh inning tied 2-2. Tim Herrin is warming up for the Guardians.

Yankees bringing in left-handed reliever Tim Hill to face Bo Naylor

Mark Leiter Jr. retired Jhonkensy Noel via a popup, and the Yankees are turning to lefty Tim Hil to face Bo Naylor with Josh Naylor on first base and one out away in the sixth.

Giancarlo Stanton home run ties Guardians-Yankees ALCS Game 5

Tanner Bibee was tremendous — until his final pitch of the night.

With two outs in the sixth, Bibee had a 3-2 count on Giancarlo Stanton, but he hung a slider, and Stanton absolutely drilled it to the bleacher seats in left field for a score-tying, two-run home run.

The exit velo on the Stanton homer was a ridiculous 117.5 mph. You just hope the fan who caught it didn't break their hand, even 446 feet away. That was crushed.

Stanton now has four home runs in this ALCS.

Brayan Rocchio, Andres Gimenez turn double play on Aaron Judge

Gleyber Torres and Juan Soto opened the sixth inning with back-to-back singles, setting up Aaron Judge with nobody out and the Guardians clinging to a 2-0 lead.

Bibee got the ground ball he needed, and Brayan Rocchio and Andres Gimenez turned a 6-4-3 double play.

Carlos Rodon taken out; Mark Leiter Jr. escapes bases-loaded jam in fifth

The Guardians have a 2-0 lead but they won't be able to add on, as Mark Leiter Jr. intentionally walked Jose Ramirez and then induced a groundout off the bat of Lane Thomas to end the inning.

Tanner Bibee is coming out for the sixth inning to face the top of the Yankees order for a third time.

Steven Kwan extends Guardians lead over Yankees in ALCS Game 5

Steven Kwan came through for the Guardians with a two-out, RBI single back up the middle to score Andres Gimenez, who doubled to left field earlier in the fifth inning.

Kwan has now reached base in 16 consecutive postseason games which is a franchise playoff record.

It's 2-0 Guardians.

Who's winning Yankees-Guardians ALCS Game 5?

Tanner Bibee is through five scoreless innings and has five strikeouts compared to three hits allowed. He's been efficient and the best version of himself tonight.

The Guardians lead the Yankees 1-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

Tanner Bibee has now retired 10 in a row, is through the fourth inning and will face the bottom of the order in the fifth. The Guardians starter is cruising after a rough start.

Tanner Bibee strikes out Aaron Judge to end third inning

It appears as though that play at the plate gave Tanner Bibee the chance to reset and calm down, as he has recovered nicely after being hit hard to start the game. Bibee just struck out Aaron Judge to end the third inning, and he's now up to four strikeouts tonight.

It's 1-0 Guardians.

ALCS Game 5 score: Naylor brothers give Guardians lead, as Bo hits in Josh vs. Yankees

The Guardians have struck first in Game 5.

In a 10-pitch at-bat, Bo Naylor roped a double that scored Josh Naylor, who took off as the pitch was thrown, from first.

The Guardians have a 1-0 lead, in part thanks to the awful decision by Yankees third base coach Luis Rojas to send Torres in the first inning.

The second inning was much easier for Bibee, who retired the bottom of the Yankees order 1-2-3. Bibee is at 30 pitches through two innings.

Carlos Rodon has 1-2-3 1st inning; ALCS Game 5 score updates between Guardians and Yankees

Carlos Rodon cruised through that first inning, striking out Steven Kwan and David Fry and inducing Jose Ramirez into a groundout to end the inning.

It was considerably less stressful of an inning compared to Bibee's for a pitcher.

Jhonkensy Noel and Andres Gimenez turned a terrific relay to keep Game 5 scoreless.

Gleyber Torres opened the first inning with a single and was followed by Juan Soto, who drilled a double to the right-center gap.

The Yankees made a pretty bad decision to send Torres home considering there were still no outs in the inning, and Gimenez made a perfect throw to the plate to save a run.

It's still scoreless in the top of the first. Tanner Bibee went on to hit Aaron Judge before striking Giancarlo Stanton out. He hit Jazz Chisholm Jr. as well to load the bases, but Anthony Rizzo hit a flyout to end the inning without damage.

After Torres and Soto both made great contact, that poor decision to send Torres to the plate is the type of move that halts momentum and allowed Bibee and the Guardians to reset.

And Gimenez's defensive value to the Guardians cannot be understated.
