The past month has been an extraordinarily challenging time for East Akron and our city. The trauma of experiencing a mass shooting within our ward during my initial six months on City Council has profoundly tested our community.

This tragedy was further compounded by the cancellation of all Juneteenth events and other citywide activities. In a city as vibrant and diverse as ours, a multitude of opinions is inevitable and welcomed in our democracy that values free speech. However, the politicization of lost and endangered lives is utterly unacceptable.

As the representative of Ward 5, I must address these issues directly. The administration and the Akron City Council's decision to cancel Juneteenth celebrations might have been handled differently, yet the primary concern was the safety of our residents. Despite contrary claims, I am the duly elected Ward 5 councilman, committed to serving in this role for the next 3½ years.

For meaningful change to occur in our ward, respect for the elected seat and its responsibilities is essential. Attempts to lead from behind undermine the political and electoral processes vital to our democracy.

A change in leadership was mandated by the voters, resulting in the election of a new councilperson. In times when decisive action is crucial, there is no room for petty egos and grandstanding. My goal is to leave Ward 5 in a better state than I found it.

Achieving this will require intense collaboration and communication among residents, the city council, and the administration. The issues we face are deep-rooted and complex, having persisted for many years. While resolutions won’t come overnight, I promise to make significant progress during my term.

Our journey toward success will be challenging, with potential setbacks and disagreements, especially in a ward as diverse as ours. As a public servant, I am prepared to face these challenges head-on.

What we cannot tolerate are malicious attempts to derail our efforts and seize power illegitimately. I reaffirm my commitment to representing Ward 5 with dedication, setting aside divisive politics. I am confident that the residents of Ward 5 will come together, and collectively, we will transform our neighborhood into a thriving community.

We each have a role to play in this collective endeavor. Ward 5 is my home, and I will always represent it with integrity and determination.

Johnnie Hannah is the Ward 5 councilman in Akron.
