    Akron Beacon Journal earns 2 first-place awards in state journalism competition

    The Akron Beacon Journal/BeaconJournal.com took home two first-place awards and numerous other honors in the Ohio Associated Press Media Editor's 2023 awards competition.

    Photojournalist Jeff Lange placed first in the best sports photo category in the large newspaper division (V).

    Reporter Stephanie Warsmith placed first in the best enterprise reporting category. She also finished second in the best news writer competition.

    The awards were announced Sunday during a luncheon in Columbus.

    Other award winners included:

    • Photojournalist Phil Masturzo, second place, best news photo.
    • Sports writer Nate Ulrich, second place, best sports enterprise.
    • Reporter Derek Kreider, second place, best spot news coverage.
    • Education writer Jennifer Pignolet, second place, best explanatory reporting.
    • Former Beacon Journal Executive Editor Michael Shearer, third place, best editorial writer.
    • Former Beacon Journal reporter Doug Livingston, third place, best investigative reporting.

    Beacon Journal photojournalist Lisa Scalfaro earned two first place awards for best feature photo and best video in the mid-sized newspaper division (III) for her work with the Record-Courier in 2023. Scalfaro also won second place honors in the best video category and finished third in the best photographer competition.
