    Worker killed after rock collapse at Alabama mine

    A worker was killed early Wednesday morning following a rock collapse at an Alabama mine.

    The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office reports that the incident occurred at the Oak Grove Mine in Adger, Alabama.

    The victim, identified as 52-year-old Jose Antonio M. Lara of Bessemer, was working underground when the collapse occurred, causing fatal blunt force injuries. The incident took place in the 8800 block of Oak Grove Mine Road just after midnight on September 25, 2024.

    Lara was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:57 a.m.

    The incident remains under investigation.

    I retired from this mine a few years ago. Didn't know the man but I worked as a miner helper for a while. You can hear the earth pop and snap as the miner operator cuts. Really dangerous job. You have no choice but to work under unsupported top as they have you cut 30 ft in the entry before pulling out to pin the top. This article makes it sound as if he made a fatal error. Unless he cut past the 30 ft mark and stood under it, it wasn't his fault. Prayers for his family and coworkers. This will be really tough on both. God bless and protect our miners.
