Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, and former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, are officially on Alabama’s November general election ballots.

The Alabama Democratic Party filed paperwork Friday to put Harris on the ballot, following the conclusion of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday. The Alabama Republican Party filed their paperwork Thursday, just over a month after Republican National Convention wrapped up.

The deadline to get on the ballot was Friday. But leaders of both parties said the timing was normal.

John Wahl, the chair of the Alabama Republican Party, said Friday that they always file their paperwork on the day of or the day before the deadline in case they have edits or amendments to downballot races.

“That’s normal for us,” he said.

Alabama Democratic Party Executive Director Tom Miro said prior to Democratic paperwork being filed on Friday that they had been in communication with the DNC and the campaign ahead of the deadline to get the certification and names of electors in the Secretary of State’s office ahead of the deadline.

“We have a plan that they are happy with,” he said. “We’re going to turn that in today. And, yeah, we’re not worried about that at all. Got folks that are getting ready to do that right now.”

The original deadline to get on the ballot was Aug. 15, before the start of the Democratic National Convention. Secretary of State Wes Allen said this spring that the Democratic party’s nominees would not appear on the ballot unless the Aug. 15 deadline was met.

Democrats sponsored legislation to move the deadline to Aug. 23. The Legislature passed the bill, and Gov. Kay Ivey signed it into law in May . Democrats held a virtual convention earlier this month to nominate Harris should there be ballot access issues after the convention.

Alabama has voted for the Republican nominee in every presidential election since 1980. The last competitive presidential race in the state took place that year, when Republican presidential nominee Ronald Reagan defeated President Jimmy Carter, the Democratic nominee, by just over 17,000 votes out of 1.3 million votes cast.
