Mixing country music with Southern rock, Alabama showcased their love for music since banding together in the late 1960s. Entertaining fans throughout the decades, the group gained popularity thanks to songs like “Dixieland Delight”, “Song of the South”, and “If You’re Gonna Play in Texas (You Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band).” Selling over 75 million albums during their time on stage, it appears that CMT Giants welcomed stars like Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton and more for a special tribute to the legendary group. And although filmed some time ago, it is finally getting a release date.

Since 2006, CMT Giants sought to celebrate and honor some of the biggest groups and performers in country music. Looking at its past, the program honored Charley Pride, Kenny Rogers, Alan Jackson, and even Vince Gill. While seeming like a great time given the massive success surrounding Alabama, the special was filmed last winter. But don’t worry – on August 15, starting at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, CMT Giants will air the special, which features close to a dozen performers.

Blake Shelton Not The Only One Honoring Alabama

The two-hour special took place at Belmont University’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. Located in Nashville, the venue seemed like the perfect place given the rich history surrounding the city. Besides holding several performances throughout the celebration, other singers like Lionel Richie, Martina McBridge, and boxer Evander Holyfield took a moment to speak about the group and praise them for their contributions to country music.

Sharing fond stories of Teddy Gentry, Randy Owen, and Jeff Cook, the special will take fans on a journey throughout their time in the spotlight, And with stars like Shelton on hand to celebrate, the special is a must-see event.

While Cook passed away back in 2022 after battling Parkinson’s disease, Owen appeared in high spirits, telling Taste of Country, “I’m 73 years old. I just had my tests and everything, and everything came back really good. I had my flu shot. So, I’m ready to go.” Don’t miss CMT Giants, broadcasting on August 15 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.
