Frank Leiva, 97, of Hale
Frank Marvin Leiva, age 97, of Hale, MI, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2024. He was bornin New York City on April 16, 1927, to the late Betty and Frank Leiva. In the 1940s, Frank attended Salisbury School, a preparatory academy in Connecticut. He was a standout athlete in baseball, football, basketball, and rowing. His academic days were cut short, however, as he joined the United States Army to serve in World War II.
Pickleball fundraiser tourney supports NMCAC
EAST TAWAS – Tawas Area Pickleball Association (TAPA) held a Fundraiser Tournament for the Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center on June 15. Two sessions of pickleball play included 36 TAPA members. The morning began with 24 men and women competing in a rigorous mixed doubles competition. The second session consisted of 12 women playing in a relaxed ladies doubles format. Both sessions were very exciting with medals awarded to first, second and third place winners.

Oscoda Township Man Found Guilty of Threatening His Former Landlord, Iosco County Prosecutor Bacarella
LANSING – On Friday, an Iosco County jury seated in the 23rd Circuit Court found Dominque Simo, 40, of Oscoda, guilty of one count of Malicious Use of a Telecommunications Device for threatening Iosco County Prosecuting Attorney James A. Bacarella, announced Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. The two men had a previous landlord-tenant relationship. The penalty for the misdemeanor is up to 6 months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine, and the State will seek a sentence inclusive of mandated mental health treatment.
