Emma Nelson, 104, of Algers
Emma (Maser) Nelson, a beacon of love and creativity, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2024, at the age of 104. Born on May 13, 1920, in AuGres, Michigan, to the late George and Elizabeth (Debus) Maser, Emma’s life was a tapestry of family, faith, and joyous creativity. She departed from this world at the Ascension Long-term Care Facility in Standish, Michigan, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.

OSCODA – In a vote of 5 to 2 with Treasurer Jaimie McGuire and Trustee Tim Cummings voting no, the Oscoda Township Board of Trustees voted to extend the resignation date for Superintendent Tammy Kline. The action took place at the board’s regular meeting on Monday, July 22.
Tawas Uncork'd to celebrate 15th festival year on Aug. 3 in East Tawas
EAST TAWAS – The Tawas Uncork’d Wine, Ale and Food Festival will be marking its 15th anniversary this year, when the 2024 event gets underway on Saturday, Aug. 3. With five full hours of fun on tap, the festival has been slated from noon to 5 p.m. and will again be hosted under a large tent in East Tawas Harbor Park, located downtown near the Newman Street and US-23 intersection.
Blindfold Canoe Race participants stay mostly dry in 2024
OSCODA – Eight teams of three competed for bragging rights and paddles during the Blindfold canoe race held the evening of Monday, July 22. Team FBC was the first to launch their canoe from the riverbank behind the AuSable River Store. Paddlers in the first and third position in the canoe were blind folded with the second position instructing the paddlers on how to navigate across the river around the buoy and back.
Cardboard Canoers show community spirit
OSCODA – As the heat of the day dissipated last Wednesday evening, this year’s second annual “all in fun” Cardboard Canoe race – one of the pre-launch activities leading up to the AuSable River Canoe Marathon – was held on the banks of the AuSable River at the Oscoda Canoe Launch. Four contestants were ready to compete, with more than 150 supportive onlookers in the crowd.
TBP slate auditions for comedy
EAST TAWAS – Upcoming auditions for the Tawas Bay Players show “The 39 Steps” will be held on Aug. 14-15 at 6:30 p.m. at Tawas Bay Playhouse, 401 Newman St., East Tawas. Needed for the show is one man, one woman and seven other parts that can be men or women ages 18 and older. Some cast members will be doing multiple parts.
Cecilia ‘Cel’ Clark, 83, of Hale
Cecilia (Cel) Mae Clark entered eternal life in the presence of both of her daughters and her husband at dawn on Sunday July 21, 2024. Cecilia was born June 29, 1941 in Milan, MI, the daughter of the late Glenn and Marie (LaPrairie) Simpkins. She graduated from Milan High School in 1959. She attended Central Michigan University and graduated with a degree in Education in 1964.
Caseville Man Faces Life In Prison Over Conviction of Repeated Sexual Assault of a Child
A Huron County jury has found a Caseville man guilty of raping a young child. On Wednesday, 47-year-old Corey Kessler was convicted on ten counts each of first- and second-degree criminal sexual conduct for repeatedly sexually touching and sexually assaulting a girl relative of his for six years, beginning when the girl was four years old. The girl testified to a child advocacy center interviewer she was sexually touched and raped more than 50 times each.
Rick Giannini, 79, of Oscoda
Richard Adalgiso Giannini, age 79, of Oscoda, MI, formerly of Ira Township, MI, passed away at Ascension St. Joseph Hospital in Tawas City, MI on July 19, 2024. He was born on August 28, 1944 in Detroit, MI to the late Mario and Josephine (Puma) Giannini. Rick graduated from Lincoln High School in Center Line, MI in 1961.
Caseville man found guilty of 20 counts of criminal sexual conduct
A Caseville man was found guilty Wednesday on 20 counts of criminal sexual conduct. The 20 counts consist of 10 counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct (CSC) in the 1st Degree and 10 counts of CSC in the 2nd Degree. The charges were brought after information about years of abuse by Kessler’s hand was shared with Huron County authorities in May 2023.
ET approves lights over Newman Street
EAST TAWAS – In keeping with the Tawas area’s July 4 fireworks theme, “Light Up the Bay,” the East Tawas Business Association (ETBA) began a project stringing lights over Newman Street. The project was initially submitted to the East Tawas City Council at their first meeting in July, which City Manager Brent Barringer followed up on at the council’s most recent meeting, on July 15.

Oscoda prepares to welcome hundreds of canoers for annual AuSable River Canoe Marathon
(WPBN/WGTU) -- The AuSable River Canoe Marathon starts this weekend in Grayling, but crews at the finish line in Oscoda are prepping for the big crowds as well. Finish Line Park is quiet now but come Sunday, thousands of marathon enthusiasts will be gathered to see who out of the hundreds of paddlers will win this year's race.
