Man fails to report boat incident, prompts search off shore of Caseville
A Lansing man earned the ire of Huron County authorities after he swam to shore when he was ejected from a small boat and failed to report the incident to authorities, prompting a search when witnesses called 911 to report a driverless boat off the shore of Caseville Township. According to a press release from Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson, deputies responded around 9:44 p.m. Saturday to the 9000 block of Sand Point in Caseville Township, where a small boat was witnessed by residents going around in circles around two miles north of the lakeshore. No occupants could be seen in the boat. Deputies suspected the boat’s occupant may have been thrown from the vessel, and with nightfall arriving, the sheriff’s office 28-foot patrol boat and crew arrived in the area to begin a search. A Coast Guard boat arrived from Tawas a short time later to join the search, Hanson said. Around 2:30 a.m., the search was suspended because of poor visibility. Deputies and Huron County dispatchers waited for reports of a missing boater or any related information. At 5:45 a.m., Hanson began a search of his own with the Caseville Patrol boat as daybreak began.
