Press release from The Hippodrome Theatre

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Hippodrome Theatre is thrilled to present “White,” a thought-provoking comedy by James Ijames, directed by Ryan Hope Travis. The production will run from March 29 to April 14, with previews on March 27 and 28.

Inspired by a true story , “White” offers a premise that is equal parts playful, prescient, and preposterous. In this contemporary Frankenstein tale, art imitates life as Gus, an artist, and Vanessa, an actress, concoct an audacious new artistic persona to infiltrate a major museum’s exhibition showcasing diverse voices.

James Ijames, the playwright, challenges societal norms and tackles pressing issues such as racism, misogyny, and cultural appropriation with wit and humor. He invites the audience to confront these modern monstrosities, subverting expectations, cracking wise, and opening eyes along the way.

As Ijames aptly puts it, “If it’s not entertaining, why the hell are we doing it? Make’m laugh. Make’m cry. Make’m call their senator. But by any means necessary. Make’m do something. Can’t change anybody’s mind if they’re asleep.”

Critics rave about “White,” describing it as “pure gold” and “audacious and hilarious.” It boldly addresses racism, sexism, and other societal issues, offering a sharp deconstruction of stereotypes from multiple perspectives. As DC Metro Theater Arts commends, “It’s bold, outlandish, insightful, and exciting… a sharp deconstruction of racial, ethnic, gender, and social stereotypes, examined from multiple points of view.”

Join us for this unforgettable theatrical experience that challenges conventions and sparks meaningful conversations. “White” promises to keep you engaged from start to finish with its twists and turns, leaving a lasting impact long after the final curtain falls.

Tickets for “White” are available now at www.thehipp.org or by calling 352 375 4477 or email boxoffice@thehipp.org . Don’t miss your chance to witness this groundbreaking production.
