    Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jaylen Jacquez Brown, 23, was arrested last night and charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana, and possession of marijuana with intent to sell.

At about 10:24 p.m. last night, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy pulled over a Dodge Charger in the 500 block of NW 75th Street because the window tint appeared to be darker than the legal limit; the tint was measured at 5%, darker than the legal limit of 15% or 28%, depending on the window.

The deputy reported that he smelled marijuana coming from the car and noted a green leafy substance “strewn throughout the vehicle” that was identified as marijuana.

A probable cause search of the car reportedly produced 38.2 grams of marijuana, two scales, and a handgun with two magazines and 36 rounds of ammunition.

Post Miranda, Brown reportedly said the marijuana was his; when asked why he had the gun, he reportedly said, “This is Florida” and added that he needed it for protection.

According to court documents, Brown has lived in the area his whole life and has no criminal convictions. Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $100,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
