( KRON ) — In the East Bay, one Starbucks location is changing the way it serves cold drinks. A Starbucks location on Park Street in Alameda has done away with single-use plastic cups and lids and is now serving cold drinks in fiber-based compostable cups.

The move away from plastic single-use cups seems to be in accordance with the Alameda Disposable Food Service Ware Reduction Law, which was passed in 2017. The ordinance was “created to reduce the number of single-use plastics generated within the City of Alameda,” according to Alameda’s website .

The first stage of the law went into effect on Jan. 1, 2018, banning the use of single-use plastic straws and dictating that they be replaced with compostable fire straws, provided only upon request.

According to the city’s website, single-use plastic items like cutlery, takeaway cartons and cold cups “are no longer acceptable in Alameda.”

A manager at the Alameda Starbucks told KRON4’s Michael Thomas that it was the only location on the West Coast serving drinks in fiber-based cups. A spokesperson for the City of Alameda Public Works Department said that while not city-mandated, using the fiber-based cold cups was in alignment with the Alameda Disposable Food Service Ware Reduction Law and with SB 54 , the state Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act.
