Rider Tips for Woodstock, the Little Yellow Ferry

The best way to enjoy the new free ferry shuttle across the Estuary is to take a tip from its namesake, Woodstock , and maintain an attitude of optimism. Remember, little hiccups along the way are to be expected, so don’t let them ruin your ride.

Here are a few rider tips, courtesy of the City of Alameda’s Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle web page:

    • Check the schedule : Woodstock operates on three different schedules, Wednesday through Sunday. There’s no service on Mondays and Tuesdays. If the schedules posted on the City of Alameda website seem a bit complicated, use the SF Bay Ferry Water Shuttle Schedule instead. It’s easier to use.
    • Plan ahead : Woodstock can take up to 31 passengers and 14 bikes, and boarding is on a first come, first served basis. If you don’t get on the first time, you can hold your place in line and wait for the next boat, but the wait may be an hour or two away, depending on the schedule. Check the schedule, plan accordingly, and get in line early.
    • Breaks in service : There are three or four pauses for crew breaks, crew changes, and refueling every day. The breaks can last from one to two-and-a -half hours, so be sure to check the schedule in advance and plan accordingly. And remember, there may be more people waiting for the runs just before and after these breaks.
    • Follow directions when you line up : The staff is still figuring out the best way to manage this, so please be patient. Form an orderly line, according to the signs and staff instructions. The most important thing is to keep the gangways, ADA ramps, and public areas of the docks clear—and stay put until passengers leaving the shuttle exit the boat and ramps.
    • Pets must be in carriers that fit on your lap : Pets are only permitted in enclosed carriers that fit on the passenger’s lap. Trained service dogs for people with disabilities may come on board without a carrier. See the SF Bay Ferry pet policy for more information.
    • Round trips : Everyone must exit the boat after each run, and then get in line to come back. The City reminds us, “This is a shuttle, not a cruise!”
    • Wear sunscreen or a hat : There’s no shade on either dock, so do whatever you normally do to protect yourself from the sun.
