    Marguerite Bachand.

A native of Oakland, Marguerite was known as a champion of vulnerable communities. Her nonprofit career also included positions with Smallpower (2008-2010) and Roots of Peace (2010-2014); both are based in San Francisco.

“Marguerite walked with a spirit of kindness,” said Patricia Wells of Oakland Housing. “She was a champion for so many vulnerable communities and made a difference that is a wonderful legacy.”

During her time as leader of Operation Dignity, an organization which primarily focuses on providing housing and services for homeless veterans, the organization became the city’s primary street outreach provider and was selected to pilot several community cabin (tiny home) sites in 2017. That program led to a wider adoption of that housing model for individuals coming directly from the streets or encampments as they prepare to be placed in transitional or permanent housing.

Marguerite also leveraged state and local funding and a partnership with a private developer to purchase and convert two former motel properties in Oakland into permanent supportive housing—one designated for veterans and the other for individuals with chronic medical and/or behavioral health issues. On these and other projects, she worked closely with the Oakland Housing Authority, Alameda County, City of Alameda , the Department of Veteran Affairs, Swords to Plowshares and over 30 other local nonprofit organizations.

Marguerite will be deeply missed by her friends and family, as well as the residents and staff of Operation Dignity.

A funeral service was held on Sunday, July 28. A community celebration of her life and legacy will follow at a later date to be announced.
