New Puzzle Protects SF Bay, Proceeds Benefit SF Baykeeper

The Oakland Puzzle Company and San Francisco Baykeeper are partnering on a commemorative jigsaw puzzle to celebrate the environmental watchdog’s 35th anniversary. The puzzle, called Under the Bay , will be manufactured and delivered in early September; pre-release sales start today . Proceeds from the puzzle will benefit Baykeeper’s mission to defend SF Bay.

The puzzle depicts 16 species that make their home in and around the waters of San Francisco Bay, its watershed, and the Golden Gate. Many of these creatures—from the spring-run Chinook salmon to the Orca whale—are harmed by pollution, dredging, and climate change. The image also includes several endangered fish species that Baykeeper is fighting to protect. It was illustrated by Fiorella Ikeue, a Peruvian-American artist based in Japan, who lived in the Bay Area for over a decade.

“ Under the Bay has so many aspects that we love in a puzzle,” said Oakland Puzzle Company founder DeAnna Tibbs. “The image is filled with dynamic elements, striking color, and whimsy, while connecting emotionally with the viewer. We’re thrilled to promote the work of Baykeeper and raise awareness of the fragile ecosystem of our local waters.”

Baykeeper’s executive director, Sejal Choksi-Chugh, agreed: “Our scientists worked with a talented artist for many months to create this beautiful underwater scene. It’s a fun, mission-driven project that intersects art, science, and play. It warms my heart to know families and friends can gather around this puzzle to appreciate many of the Bay’s species and consider how we can protect this unique ecosystem together. It’s also a great way to celebrate Baykeeper’s 35 years defending these wonderful creatures under the Bay!”
