The Alameda Post is excited to introduce All Around Alameda—our quick picks for upcoming events in and around our Island City. Discover new offerings and revisit old favorites while you answer the eternal question, “What should we do this week?”

Summer is in full swing, and beautiful weather is bringing Alamedans of all ages outdoors to soak up the sunshine. Runners, walkers, dancers, and cyclists all have opportunities to stretch their legs with this week’s event highlights.

Bank of Marin Island Running Festival

Friday, August 16 – Sunday, August 18

Outfront Endurance and the Alameda 10 Miler have teamed up for the 2024 Bank of Marin Island Running Festival at Alameda Point . Stop by on Friday, August 16, for the Movers Collective Mile heats (elite, adults, and youth). The Alameda 10 Miler and 1 Mile Family Fun Run are both scheduled for Saturday, August 17. The running festival will conclude on Sunday, August 18, with the Half Marathon and 10K races.

The various distances will highlight several beautiful areas around the island, including its many new running trails, the estuary shoreline, and the USS Hornet .

All races start at City Hall West on Alameda Point, 950 West Mall Square. Parking is available onsite. More information and registration links are available on the Alameda Running Festival website.

Alameda Walks

Saturday, August 17

Lace up your walking shoes and gather your friends for this free, educational walk around Encinal Beach, the USS Hornet , and Seaplane Lagoon at Alameda Point on Saturday, August 17 at 9 a.m.

This walk will be led by East Bay Regional Park District Naturalist Susan Ramos. Catch a glimpse of harbor seals at the best viewing spot in the San Francisco Bay and take a tour of Alameda Point along the shoreline. The walk will start at the Encinal Boat Ramp and go to Seaplane Lagoon Promenade and back—about 2.5 miles total, on flat trails. Bring binoculars if you have them. A limited supply will be available to borrow.

The walk begins at 9 a.m. and lasts until 10:45 a.m. Meet at the Encinal Boat Ramp, 150 Central Ave., and look for the red Alameda Walks hats! Kindly leave pets at home. Preregistration is not necessary. More information is available on the Alameda Walks page of the City of Alameda website.

South Seas Swing on the USS Hornet

Saturday, August 17

Get out your dancing shoes and come aboard the USS Hornet for the South Seas Swing on Saturday, August 17, 5:30 to 9 p.m. The evening will feature a live swing band, heavy hors d’oeuvres from Pacific Fine Foods catering, and a cash tiki bar. Hawaiian shirts and vintage clothing are encouraged.

Admission is free to any member of the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum, located at 707 West Hornet Avenue. Non-members may purchase tickets online for $40 per person, which includes the day’s admission to the Museum. Parking is available on site.

Adult Learn-to-Ride Class

Sunday, August 18

Bike East Bay welcomes teens and adults to the Adult Learn-to-Ride Class at Alameda Waterfront Park, 2151 Ferry Point, on Sunday, August 18, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

New riders, as well as riders in need of a refresher course, are welcome to join this non-judgmental class. Bike East Bay’s trained instructors are friendly, patient, and will help you get off to a great start in a safe environment.

The class is free for participants who bring their own working bicycle and helmet. A limited number of bikes are available to rent for $30; equipment reservation required. All participants must register online for this in-demand class.

This workshop has a very low student-to-teacher ratio. If the class is full, you can be added to the wait list or be notified about future sessions as they are added. Any teen wishing to participate must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

Salsa by the Bay

Sunday, August 18

Indulge in the captivating rhythms of the Bay Area’s hottest salsa at Building 43 Winery, 2440 Monarch St., on Sunday, August 18. Arrive early to take a salsa class at 3 p.m., and stay for social dancing with a live band beginning at 4:00 p.m.

Wine, sangria, mimosas, beer, and mouthwatering delights from Yo Soy Ceviche and Tacos Borachos will be available for purchase. Space is limited for Salsa by the Bay, so reserve a spot online .

Can’t make it this weekend? No worries! Salsa by the Bay happens every Sunday at Building 43 Winery and features a rotation of live bands each week.
