There’s always something going on in Alameda—you just need to know where to look. In this week’s edition of All Around Alameda, we take a look at a few of this week’s upcoming events that let you kick back, relax, and enjoy a show.

Starlight Movies in the Parks Screens Kung Fu Panda 4

Friday, August 23

What could be better than a free, family-friendly movie under the stars in the summertime? Join ARPD at the Alameda Point Multi-Purpose Field, 1101 West Redline Avenue, to watch Kung Fu Panda 4 . This fun-filled event will start at 6:30 p.m. with pre-show festivities including games and crafts for kids. The movie will start between 8:15 and 8:45 p.m., depending on darkness.

Snacks and food will be available for purchase—proceeds support the Teen Program. Please bring your lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy this film. Pre-registration is not necessary.

Please note that this movie will be shown with Spanish subtitles. Kindly leave all barbecue grills, alcoholic beverages, and pets at home.

The Night Alive at Altarena Playhouse

Friday, August 23 to Sunday, September 22

The Night Alive takes the stage on Friday, August 23, for its opening performance at Altarena Playhouse, 1409 High Street. See the show at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, or 2 p.m. on Sundays, through September 22.

This Conor McPherson show is the winner of the 2013–2014 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play. Altatrena describes The Night Alive on their website : “Tommy’s just getting by. He’s renting a run-down room in uncle’s house, rolling from one get-rich-quick scheme to the other with his pal Doc. He comes to the aid of Aimee, who’s not had it easy herself, struggling through life the only way she knows how. Their pasts won’t let go easily, but together there’s a glimmer of hope they could make something more of their lives, something extraordinary, perhaps. With inimitable warmth, style, and craft, this play deftly mines the humanity found in the most unlikely of situations.”

The Night Alive runs for 2 hours and 15 minutes with one 15-minute intermission. Guests who require mobility accommodations are encouraged to reach out to the theater in advance . The Sunday, September 8, show at 2 p.m. will offer a live audio description and pre-show Haptic Access Tour provided by Gravity Access . See more on Altarena’s Accessibility web page . Rising Seas Premiere

Saturday, August 24

The City of Alameda joins forces with three of Alameda’s most prominent arts organizations to present Rising Tides , a year-long series of arts experiences and performances surrounding sea level rise . The Rising Seas performances and reception kick off the series. See the free premiere at Rhythmix Cultural Works , 2513 Blanding Avenue, August 24, 2 to 5 p.m.

Performance schedule highlights:

• 2:30-3:30 p.m .: Rising Seas concert | Maze Daiko highlights Japanese taiko and traditional dance.
• 3:30-3:45 p.m .: Climate Detective from the Future | SF Mime Troupe veteran Ed Holmes tells stories of Alameda’s waterfront past, present and future, directed by Jeff Raz (formerly of Cirque du Soleil).
• 3:45-4 p.m. : Where do we draw the line? | Interactive dance choreographed by KT Nelson moves to a soundscape by Tina (Bean) Blaine that weaves together the voices of Alameda residents and sustainability leaders.

Live Music at Alameda Brewing Rebrand Launch Party Weekend

Saturday, August 24 to Sunday, August 25

Come for a drink and stay for the tunes at Alameda Brewing’s rebranding launch party at their tap room at 1716 Park Street. Over the weekend-long celebration, four acts will grace the stage to celebrate as local favorite Alameda Island Brewing officially adopts its new name, Alameda Brewing, releases new beers, and shows off a new logo.

Music schedule:

• Saturday, 4-7 p.m .: D.J. B. Wiley will bring together many styles of music including hip hop, electronic, funk, bass, and psychedelic.
• Saturday, 8-10 p.m. : GnarlyMen , described as a “ NorCal Instrumental Surf Rock band ” will play a variety of classics and modern songs.
• Sunday, 2-5 p.m. : Get jazzy with the Dan Foltz Jazz Trio, a regular favorite at the brewery and in the surrounding Bay Area.
• Sunday, 7-9 p.m. : Finish the weekend strong with the Bay Station Band, a West Coast Americana group. Sample their 2023 EP online to get a sneak peek.

Drag Yourself to Brunch

Sunday, August 25

This brunch is worth getting out of bed for! The Alameda Comedy Club, at 2431 Central Avenue, hosts Drag Yourself to Brunch on Sunday, August 25 at noon.

The event includes a prix fixe menu for guests, featuring a deluxe waffle platter with bacon, sausage, salmon, and fresh fruit. Sip on a mimosa, Bloody Mary, or non-alcoholic drink while you watch the amazing cast of drag performers and enjoy your unforgettable drag brunch experience.

Purchase tickets in advance to reserve your seat. If you can’t make it this week, no worries— Drag Yourself to Brunch is a weekly event at noon on Sundays at the Alameda Comedy Club.
