Seven-month-old sisters Aurora and Borealis are shy, gentle, smart girls who were surrendered together but can be adopted separately at Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter .

The timid pups may not quite live up to their luminous names yet, but the FAAS animal care team predicts they will glow as they grow in confidence and experience in the real world. They came from a very sheltered first few months, and can be quite hesitant in new situations.

They’re very smart pups and are learning quickly. Borealis is super affectionate and sweet when comfortable. Bonus: They’re highly food-motivated, which goes a long way in helping them adjust to new settings and encounters.

The girls are border collie/husky mixes. Aurora, the dark-eyed beauty, weighs 18 pounds. Borealis, with those stunning light blue eyes, weighs 20 pounds. FAAS says it’s unlikely either will get above 35 pounds as adults, so they’re ideal for someone who’s looking for a “smaller model” of typically larger breeds.

Aurora and Borealis may be skittish around other pets or young kids at first, and will need patient, quiet homes to help them develop into their more confident selves.

You can visit them at 1590 Fortmann Way from noon to 4 p.m., any day but Monday.
