    Machu Picchu Comin’ Atchu!

Pet of the Week for October 26, 2024

Sweet nine-month-old Machu Picchu is a testament to the love and devotion of the Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter animal care staff. When she first arrived at FAAS , she was very scared and shy. She had a strong case of “the tucked-tail blues” for a couple of months—but not any more.

Now there’s a very different Machu at FAAS. It seems all the caring, extra attention, and work FAAS staff has done to help her feel more confident has given her the boost she needed to know that people are good, that she’s safe, and that life can be really fun.

She’s still shy in new settings, but once she settles in, you’ll see her zippy, fun, happy, 40-pound puppy self.

Speaking of pups, Machu would likely thrive in a home with a dog that she can scramble around and play with. She loves other dogs, and playing with them is her favorite sport.

When she’s comfortable, she has gobs of puppy energy, so she’ll need an adopter who can get her out for regular exercise. She’s a good walker! See for yourself:

And once you’re out with Machu, you may notice a phenomenon—people are going to comment on her amazing ears. These insanely adorable, verrrry tall ears are like exclamation marks. They make Machu look like she’s surprised and excited about everything. And she is, once she’s in her comfort zone. When she’s relaxed, one of them still flops down ever so cutely.

Come meet Machu Picchu-–and see her lovely ears—any day but Monday, noon to 4 p.m., at the FAAS main shelter, 1590 Fortmann Way. Take her for a walk, and you might want to take her home for life!
