Docs: Alamo man arrested for shaking 1-year-old boy, causing brain bleed

ALAMO, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — An Alamo man remains in jail Friday after allegedly shaking a 1-year-old boy and causing a brain bleed, documents revealed.

Hugo Armando Salazar, 24, was arrested on a charge of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury, according to Hidalgo County Jail records.

A probable cause affidavit stated that at 2:52 p.m. on May 1, deputies were dispatched to the 1100 block of Mariposa Drive in Alamo for an injury to a child report. Deputies met with a Child Protective Services investigator, who said he was investigating a case of a child who fell off a bed on April 29.

The child was taken to the Alamo Freestanding Emergency Room before being transported via helicopter to the Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi with a brain bleed, the document stated.

Alamo police spoke with the child’s mother, who provided “inconsistent stories,” about the incident. According to the affidavit, she did not want to provide any information regarding her boyfriend, identified as Salazar.

Investigators obtained a statement from Salazar, who denied any abuse to the child, noting that he was “deceptive several times” throughout the statement.

The affidavit stated the child’s mother provided a second statement, where she said she saw Salazar shake the child at his house following an argument.

“She states [Salazar] got her 1-year-old child and shook him with both hands while carrying him in the air in a back and forth motion,” the affidavit stated.

Following this, she said the child starting having seizures and they took him to the emergency room.

Investigators spoke with doctors at the hospital, who said the injuries were consistent with abusive head trauma causing by acceleration and deceleration, adding that the injuries could not have been caused by a fall from any bed.

Salazar was booked into the Hidalgo County Jail on Tuesday. He remains jailed on a $15,000 bond, as of Friday morning.
