In a release from the NMSP they are investigation an officer involved shooting involving the Laguna Police On July 30, 2024, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was requested to investigate an officer-involved shooting involving the Laguna Police Department (LPD).

Investigations Bureau agents learned that at around 11:45 a.m., LPD officers received a call for a welfare check on NM State Road 6 near mile marker 2 for a female on the side of the road. EMS personnel were also dispatched to that area for a call of a female who seemed to be in distress. EMS personnel arrived on scene first and observed a crying female, identified as Georgia Martinez Rubio (43).

As the EMS ambulance began to pull over to assist her, Rubio pointed a firearm at ambulance personnel. The driver of the ambulance then accelerated away from the scene and notified LPD. LPD officers arrived on scene and at some point during the encounter, Rubio pointed a firearm in the direction of officers. At least one officer discharged their duty weapon, striking Rubio.

Officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived on scene and transported Rubio to an area hospital with what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured during this incident.

The LPD officer will not be identified by the New Mexico State Police. For information on their duty status or administrative actions taken, please contact the Laguna Police Department.

New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the district attorney for review.

The New Mexico State Police acts solely as a factfinder in officer involved shootings and does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified. That decision rests with the district attorney’s office. This incident remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.
