Big Bang STEM Expo Comes to Alamogordo June 29, 2024
Alamogordo, New Mexico – Family friendly, minds-on, hands-on STEM activities take center stage at the third annual BIG BANG STEM EXPO on Saturday, June 29, at the Tays Special Event Center from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The event is sponsored by the International Space Hall of Fame Foundation (ISHFF), New Mexico Museum of Space History, and New Mexico State University Alamogordo. In addition, the ISHFF hopes to make an exciting announcement about the partnership between Team Holloman and the Foundation to create a STARBASE program at Holloman.

Phillip Stewart went into action with a plea of guilty to two of the lesser charges against him before Monday's opening statements at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston in his court-martial for the alleged sexual assault of a subordinate officer.
Ruidoso Fires Update Tuesday 6-25-24: Postal Delivery Resumes, 29 People Still Missing
The South Fork and Salt fires has affected over 25,000 acres and continue to pose significant risks. Over 1,100 personnel are working tirelessly to protect lives and property. Residents are urged to stay informed and cautious, especially with the potential for flooding and debris flows from incoming storms. The fires are burning on Mescalero Tribal, US Forest Service land, and areas around the Village of Ruidoso. Road closures are in effect.

President Joe Biden signed a federal emergency declaration to pave the way for funds and additional aid to address the damage in the Ruidoso area from the South Fork and Salt fires.

Remembering US Air Force Colonel Mark "Tyson" Sletten Director of Operations for Alaskan Command
Alamogordo locals Scott and Kristen Fredrick expressed via a social media post that; "Tragically, the world is a lesser place with the passing of Mark "Tyson" Sletten. He and another pilot were killed in a float plane accident on Tuesday in Alaska. Tyson was a larger than life personality and his passing is a crushing blow to so many of us that loved him. Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle, Fighter Pilot, Colonel, USAF Academy Boxer, and Friend are only some of the words to describe this man. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Alison, Mary, Sarah, Naomi, Anna, Rebekah, Matt, Josh, and all of the Sletten family.

Juneteenth is celebrated as the oldest commemoration to the end of slavery in the U.S. and was remembered via a celebration at Washington Park this warm and humid Saturday. For some its history is little known, a fact that a celebration of the federal holiday in Alamogordo helps to shine a light upon. Interestingly many people were unaware of the significance of Juneteenth until this most recent decade.

The Mexico Department of Justice announced that Special Agents from the New Mexico Department of Justice arrested Leonard Romero at his residence in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Romero, a former teacher at Memorial Middle School, has not been employed at the institution since the sexual assault allegations emerged.

With conditions improving, 1109 personel on the ground engaged in fighting the fires around Ruidoso finally there are signs of hope with containment growing now at South Fork at 26%; Salt Fires with 7% per the Saturday update from New Mexico Fire.
