Otero Arts is celebrating the 87th anniversary of the opening of the Alamogordo Women’s Club during May at Otero Artspace. In 2019, Otero Arts leased the historic building, constructed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) at 1118 Indiana Ave. in Alamogordo, and has been holding monthly art exhibitions as well as concerts, workshops, literary events, and community meetings at the venue, now known as Otero Artspace.

In a developing story yesterday AlamogordoTownNews.org confirmed a police and fire department action at the Oretro County Detention Center resulting in a variety of law enforcement agencies descending upon the facility around 6 p.m.
New Mexico State Supreme Court Affirms Las Cruces Candidate Ronnie Sisneros’ Disqualification
Ronnie Sisneros’ disqualification was affirmed on May 9, 2024, following a order of the New Mexico State Supreme Court. The ruling affirmed that District 37 Rep. Joanne Ferrary, a Democrat who has held the seat since 2017, will remain in office.
West Las Vegas 8th Grader Breaks State Home Run Record and Helps Win State Title
Eighth-grader Malie Satete of West Las Vegas (Las Vegas, N.M.) broke New Mexico's prep all-time single-season home run record, bashing a nation-leading 25 round-trippers according to MaxPreps leaderboards. Malie Satete, an 8th grader who plays for West Las Vegas, put her name on top of a list in the New Mexico high school record book. Satete hit her 21st home run of the season on Tuesday against rival Robertson, breaking the previous mark of 20 home runs in one year. Last week, Satete tied the record with her 20th home run of the year in a 14-7 win against Raton. Jalyn Montes of Cibola High School set the previous high mark in 2023.
Otero County N.M. Detention Center History of Issues: Rising Expenses, Unrest, Staffing Shortages
The detention center in Otero County, New Mexico was yet again a scene of unrest the late afternoon of May 21st, 2024 calling for reinforcements from various law enforcement agencies and the fire department to be dispatched to restore order, provide first aide and other services. This is not the first incident nor first occurrence of concern and conflict brought to light at the center.

The Otero County Detention center has had a history of unrest with a near riot scene occurring in 2017 with several prisoners refusing to follow orders and a lockdown ordered after a large disturbance.

The Alamogordo group attempting to open the Sacramento School of Engineering and Science conducted two community forums recently, one on the 15th at 6 pm and one on the 21st at noon each lasted exactly one hour and had very low public attendance but checked the box as a part of the application process.
Evacuation Order Lifted Near Cloudcroft, 12% Containment Moser Fire, Blue Fire Update
The Moser fire near Cloudcroft located approximately 4 miles outside of town is reported by the U.S. Forestry Service as 12% contained and as of 8 p.m. Tuesday local law enforcement has lifted the evacuation order.
Lincoln National Forest Blue Fire Update 5-21-24
The United States Forestry Service has provided the following updat specific to the Blue Fire in the Lincoln National Fores. Based on aerial observations, the Blue Fire has not shown any growth, and is remaining at .5 acres. Blue 2 Fire is also holding at 45 acres.
The Moser Fire Cloudcroft New Mexico Evacuation Order in Place, Update 11 pm
The Moser Fire started around 3:45 pm today off the side of Highway 82, four miles east of Cloudcroft. The fire began moving uphill in mixed conifer forest. Gusty winds created several spot fires ahead of the main fire. Firefighters from multiple agencies quickly responded to the fire. Firefighting crews and heavy equipment, including 2 bull dozers, are constructing direct fire line on the south, southwest and western sides of the fire and will continue to work their way to the north.

Child Solicitation Arrest: NM Police & Air Force OSI Collaborate
On May 6, 2024, Agents with the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau, in collaboration with Special Agents with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI), initiated a Child Solicitation investigation. On May 13, 2024, 26-year-old Miguel Garza, residing in Clovis, New Mexico, agreed to meet with an undercover investigator posing as a 14-year-old female. Throughout the day, Garza disclosed how he wanted to be sexually intimate with the undercover 14-year-old. Garza planned on meeting what he believed to be the 14-year-old female at a local hotel. At approximately 8:00 p.m., Garza arrived at the hotel and was taken into custody by NMSP and OSI Agents without incident.

It’s been decades since Alamogordo Tiger Softball fans have been treated to a finer season and a team of well rounded athletes that inspired their school and the city of Alamogordo. The Lady Tigers softball team can hang their head up with pride, as the school year end approaches with these fine ladies bringing home a 2nd Place red trophy. This success adds to this years many successes, among the many NMAA Association awards bestowed upon Alamogordo High School participants this school year.
Fulton C. Potter of Mescalero Found Guilty of Strangling His Wife
In a plea deal released this week by the US Department of Justice New Mexico office Fulton C. Potter plead guilty to strangling his wife. According to court records, Fulton C. Potter, 29, an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, pleaded guilty in federal court to assault of an intimate partner by strangling or suffocating.
Holloman AFB and Alamogordo Welcomes New 49th Wing Commander Col. John T. Ethridge
Col. John T. Ethridge assumes command of the 49th Wing and Holloman Air Force Base, in New Mexico near Alamogordo. The 49th Wing at Holloman Air Force Base hosted its change of command ceremony on May 17, welcoming Col. John T. Ethridge while saying goodbye to Col. Justin B. Spears.
