Nothing is off the table when a bald eagle is on the hunt. Generally, our nation's bird will choose to hunt smaller prey, mainly living off of fish, rabbits, and even smaller birds. Bald eagles are incredibly strong though, which opens up the opportunity for them to go after animals that are much larger than them. Sometimes they are successful when their eyes are larger than their stomach, like this bald eagle that
struggled to lift up a massive lake trout . Other times, they quite literally bite off more than they can chew, as illustrated by this brave bald eagle that dove down out of the sky to claw at a big ol' brown bear . Being the skilled hunters that they are, bald eagles (with their sharp talons) can make short work of a number of different animals. The only area they are limited in is towing their prey out after they've attacked. The typical rule of thumb is that a bald eagle can carry about half as much as they weigh, though that can obviously be affected by wind conditions that could either hurt them or help them in their carrying. Sometimes eagles will just make a meal out of the prey at their final resting place. That's likely what this bird did in Alaska when it saw a smaller Sitka black tail deer - that already appeared to be struggling - walking around on a frozen lake. It might look like a winter wonderland in the clip, but in reality, this poor deer was going through a living nightmare. The bald eagle quickly took advantage of the slippery ice and the deer's lessened condition. It quickly asserted its dominance over the deer, using its talons to clamp down on the deer and keep it in place. Towards the end of the clip, it appears the bald eagle was just waiting for nature to takes its course before it took part in an all-you-can-eat deer buffet. If I'm being honest with you, it's a little gruesome to watch. But at the same time, it's cool to the bald eagle take advantage of an easy meal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37wpS0Ypumw
