Over the last week, areas from the Plains to the Ohio Valley have turned into a hotbed for severe weather, and AccuWeather forecasters are once again putting locations across the Midwest on alert for robust thunderstorms this weekend.

A slow-moving frontal boundary will drop south across the region today and tomorrow, triggering showers and storms today and an area of rain on Tuesday. This boundary extends west to east roughly across Lake Ontario this morning. An area of rain and storms over Canada has moved out over the northern waters of Lake Ontario. This area of precipitation is expected to stay out over the lake until it passes east of the Finger Lakes.

According to Newsweek, The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued flash flood warnings for regions within the Four Corners area as monsoonal thunderstorms intensify. The warnings apply to portions of southwestern Colorado, northwestern New Mexico, southeastern Utah, and northeastern Arizona, where heavy rainfall is anticipated through Friday. This increases the risk of localized flash flooding, particularly in areas with burn scars—lands previously scorched by wildfires.

Tropical Storm Fabio formed over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico on Monday morning. At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Storm Fabio was located at latitude 14.8°N and longitude 106.9°W which put the center about 335 miles (540 km) southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. Fabio was moving toward the northwest at 12 m.p.h. (19 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1006 mb.

The cutoff low pressure system that made its north through New England Monday night into Tuesday morning. This combined with a very moisture-rich atmosphere and the slow moving nature of the system led to intense showers and storms surviving well into the overnight hours. Storm training, when multiple storms move over the same area, set up across northeast Vermont. This led to a rather extreme amount of rain to fall in a very short period of time. We'll go into more detail on the setup of this storm in a later post.

HONOLULU (AP) — Tropical Storm Hone increased to a Category 1 hurricane while continuing its steady approach toward Hawaii late Saturday, forecasters said. Hone (pronounced hoe-NEH) had top winds of 75 mph (120 kph), according to an 11 p.m. advisory by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu. The minimum threshold for a hurricane is 74 mph (119 kph).  A tropical storm warning remained in effect for the Big Island as the storm moved west at 12 mph (19 kph) about 105 miles (170 kilometers) south of Hilo, Hawaii, and about 275 miles (440 kilometers) southeast of Honolulu, the center said. The hurricane center, part of the National Weather Service, previously said Hone was expected to remain just below hurricane strength at its peak Sunday through Monday.
