Alba Schools seeking $3.25 million for school building maintenance

The Alba School District is seeking $3.25 million in the upcoming primary election for school infrastructure and safety upgrades.

Superintendent Rich Satterlee says that the small district of around a hundred students is in need of upgrades to restrooms, roofing and HVAC.

“It’s about improving the building, making it safer, and generally a better place to go to school for the kids,” he said.

Satterlee says that some building fixtures are as much as 50 years old. Not approving funding now could lead to greater challenges down the road, he says.

“We’re a small district, one of the smaller ones in the state — and we either make the investment today, to make sure for the next 20, 25, 30 years, we’re set up with both safety and HVAC, plumbing items that need to be taken care of,” he said.

The funding would also go towards creating a secure entryway.

The millage would not increase tax rates since it’s replacing an expiring bond.

Voters will have the chance to weigh in on the proposal with the Aug. 6 primary election. Satterlee encouraged voters to attend a school tour on July 31.
