Spectrum High School’s boys basketball team has tied the school’s single season win record of 24 by advancing to Wednesday’s 6 p.m. Section 6AA semifinal at St. John’s University against Albany Huskies, the defending state champion.

The Sting, who have only lost three games all season, beat MCAA conference rival Legacy Lions (24-4). The two teams split two games this season with each team winning their home game and took the rubber match with a 77-66 win.

The two teams started with a back and forth slugfest of tough finishes and contested shots until the Sting broke through at the halfway point of the half taking a 22-10 lead. Legacy pushed back, getting the game within a few possessions until senior guard Lance Siegel rattled off 10 points in five offensive possessions to take back control of the game going into the half with 39-29 lead.

Even through foul trouble of multiple players and having to play unorthodox grouping of players the Sting found a way to keep defending and scoring with Legacy, especially Junior Jordan Williams who scored 15 of his team leading 26 in the second half and including three three pointers. In the end Spectrum broke through the Legacy press with ease en route to an 11-point win and a spot in the Section 6AA Semi-Finals.

Jordan Williams scored 26 points on 9-15 shooting, senior captain Blake Femrite even through foul troubles found 14 points along with seven rebounds and six assists.

On Thursday, March 7 the Spectrum Sting started off the section playoffs with a decisive and focused win against the Kimball Cubs. The final score was 74-34.

Spectrum jumped out to an early 16-1 lead to start the game and never looked back. With early occasional pressing mixed with efficient transition offense the speed of the Sting was just too much for the Cubs, however Kimball went on a small run to end the half making the score 42-19 at the halfway point. Spectrum took off from there defensively only allowing 15 points in the second half and running patient and selfless offense on the offensive end.

Junior Braden Nelson led all scorers with 24, helped by senior captain Blake Femrite scoring 17, and Junior Jordan Williams adding 15.
